Hello,
I am happy to see the efforts being made to mentor our young men. I have a son, and I hope that he will never have to look far for a mentor. We must recognize, though, that it is our due diligence to do precursory checks on anyone who interacts with our youth. Our company, Verify-ED, conducts background screening and this includes the National Sex Offender database search. The Sex Offender search only costs $12.50, and the knowledge is invaluable. Other background searches start at $10.00. We ask the organizations to contact us if they need assistance verifying backgrounds and doing this simple check. Good luck and much support! Big Brothers Big Sisters Services, Inc, bbbsnc.org, is the most effective youth mentoring organization in our area. We are one of 500 affiliated agencies under the parent organization, Big Brothers Big Sisters of America. BBBS serves more than 600 children annually. Independent research shows that the BBBS model of professionally supported relationships between young people and their adult mentors has a direct, measurable and lasting impact. Children in the program are more likely to graduate from high school and less likely to be involved in violence. BBBS model of mentoring helps break cycles. The organization is currently focusing on recruiting volunteers, with an emphasis on the need for Big Brothers.

As a single parent of two teenage boys I say thank you. As a mother I can love my boys, I can teach them right from wrong, and I can make sure they get a good education. But no matter how hard I try I can't teach them how to be men. My boys have been cheated out of a father by their father. It is a shame that we have to go outside the family to get positive male role models for our sons. It is a shame the black man has failed us, has failed his kids. Thank you Michael for stepping up and doing more than your part. Thank you for picking up the slack. Thank you to those black men that are positive role models. I am in need of mentors for my boys. Black men, it is time to make a difference.

It is something that I heard this on the show today. We at Project Unity USA are in the process of gathering 10,000 men here in Columbia SC. We will be asking them to not only re-engage their own children but also mentor another child.
We will be splitting them up into groups of 200 to 300 and send them out into the communities to deliver the same message door to door. They will also be instructed to collect names of young men and women that are looking for mentors / Big Brothers or Big Sisters. They will also be looking for adults that are trying to get their lives together and or that would like to be a Big Brother or Big Sister. I / We not only commend your efforts but we will support them by forwarding this information to you as well as Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Columbia, SC. We sure could use the help of Mr. Baisden to get the word out. This movement is scheduled for April 5th, 2008. Thanks

I am a single mother of a soon to be 13 year old son. I have always tried to provide him with positive male role models. We moved to Atlanta a little over 2 years ago and he has come in contact with several black male role models. He is in an afterschool program, Boys To Men,that meets 3x per week. It was started by a Social Studies teacher at the school. Two days a week he has a gentleman that comes in to teach them Tang Soo Do. The other day the boys just hang out, talk and play video games. One Saturday a week the kids can go to the school for 5 hours to play basketball and video games. He just wants them to build relationships and learn to communicate with one another. He sometimes have guest speakers come in to talk to the kids and/or the parents. The 8th graders have to look out for and mentor the 6th & 7th graders. My son loves it and I will make sure he returns to volunteer when he goes to high school and college. This program is breeding future mentors.
His other male role models outside of family are his jazz band teacher (he plays the sax), math teacher and his new JETS (Junior Engineering Technology Society) sponsor. They are all black men making a difference. I say all of this to say there are a lot of men out there donating their time - check your child's school for afterschool programs. Also, I want to show that one person can make a big difference to many young men. Although my son is a straight A student, he does not really like going to school. The three days he stays after school for the extracurricular activities are the days he actually looks forward to going. And no matter what is going on, he will not miss a Boys To Men Saturday. It starts at 9am but he always tries to convince me he has to be there at 8 am to help set up. |

My name is Andrea Bowles and I am the Program/Talent Director for an organization called H.Y.P.E. (Helping Youth Pursue Excellence). We are trying to make a positive impact in the lives of our youth. For your information, I have enclosed below our organization's mission statement and objective.
MISSION: The mission of this organization is to identify and attack the problems and/or issues that lie at the core of why our children are easily distracted from education. This will be done through research, motivational speaking and entertainment. OBJECTIVE: This program is designed in a motivational speaking/entertainment format that will target issues that are common, prevalent and gender specific. We will offer a professional panel of speakers who will address the issues that students at the middle and high school age range have identified as crucial to them in a pre-completed, anonymous survey. There will be a noted keynote speaker, a performance by a step team and a motivational rap/skit performance to attack the problems that our youth are facing. What makes this program unique is the fact that issues that students have personally chosen as important in their lives will be focused on. This approach will eliminate information being thrown at them that society or statistics deem necessary. After an allotted time period in a merged assembly, the group will be separated by gender in order to discuss the concerns and/or specific questions that are geared towards them without the pressure of an opposite sex audience. Literature from the professionally diverse panel of participants will be requested in order to provide additional information on any topics that may have been inadvertently been over-looked. HYPE consists of business professionals, educators and professional athletes. The organization will offer a wide range of advice from a professional panel of speakers for each gender. The service that HYPE will provide will be an hour in a half program that will consist of entertainment to help resolve problems that our youth are facing through peer pressure, being stereotype and being mentally challenge when it comes to learning. HYPE will be partnering with other non-profit organizations to prepare kids mentally to perform better in school. HYPE will also produce seminars such as Teen Domestic Violence, Teen Alcohol/Drug Abuse, The Athlete vs. The Student, Preparing for the Work Force, Preparing Teens mentally for college, How to dress for the public and for that first job interview Ect. This organization is design to motivate and educate kids to the pressures of being a teenager in this new millennium. Hi,
I applaud the work that you are doing for these young men. The National Black MBA Association has a program called Leaders of Tomorrow (LOT) where we mentor high school students with a grade point average between C- and C+. These students have exhibited leadership potential, but require additional motivating people and factors in their lives to realize their full potential. We've found that this a group that can go either way and is usually ignored because they are not doing "great" enough to be actively sought after for scholarships or special programs but not doing "bad" enough to be given that extra attention by the school system. In Richmond, we have been running the program for 4 years and have mentored young Black males as well as women. As president of the Richmond Chapter I am proud to say that we have some professional Black males in my chapter that have stepped up to help make our LOT program a success, but we can always do better. Anyone in the Richmond or Hampton Roads area that would like more informaton can contact me at president@ricbmbaa.org or call me at 804-721-5401. They can also go to our website at www.ricbmbaa.org. Respectfully, Marc Chambers President, NBMBAA-Richmond |
