After years of extensive family research, I had not yet discovered the fact that Sam or members of his family were White, but I did manage to uncover a considerable amount of historical information about him, his wife, his parents and fourteen of his siblings, including the location of the plantation on which he and his family had been enslaved as well as the name of their former owner (Dr. Henry W. Faison of Faison, North Carolina) and a possible Bill of Sale for Sam’s father. I was even fortunate enough to come across a collection of oil paintings depicting many of the former slaves of the Faison's who—like my great-great grandparents—never left their plantation even after Emancipation. When it came to discovering my great grandfather Sam Faison on the census, however, things were much different. Though he was born a slave, according to the federal census he was also White."

My name is Brian Richardson. I have been teaching computer literacy for the last six years in Houston, Texas. When I first started, I was still getting curriculum together. (Since teaching computer concepts was still new, I had some leeway.) "What would be a cool thing to teach kids that would empower them for the rest of their lives?" I thought. I had just taken a small class on HTML at an adult learning center, and took to it like a duck to water. "HTML would be a perfect thing to teach them, but I need to find a way to break the concepts down into a level that a child could understand. (As a opposed to many books on HTML that you find in the bookstore that, IMHO, make things harder than what they really are.)"

I've been thinking about coming out with this product for close to 4 years now. Back in August 2006, I finally said to myself, "I gotta make this move NOW!" After staying up in Starbucks with my laptop pecking out a script, getting kicked out of Starbucks after closing hours, going to the courthouse to register my company, finding a production company, and a couple of other things, with God's hand being on me the whole time, I finally came out with my website and product LIVE at 6:01PM EST Friday March 30th. No, it's not a book. It's even better. It's in DVD format with a live person teaching (me!) with two children learning right along with you, called (drum roll):

Hey Michael...I listen to this topic every month and love the inspirational stories that I hear. However, I have been one of those people who have been afraid of venturing out on my own full time, because I LOVE the job that I've had for the past year and a half. People are constantly telling me to step out on faith, that I have the talent to do my own thing..but I worried about not having insurance for my kids or a steady income. I am a single mom, who has three kids..one in college, no child support but a lot of blessings!! I found out yesterday that this job I love will be letting me go at the end of this month because my boss is retiring, so since the position was created for him...they are collapsing the position. I have cried my eyes out..but I realize that sometimes God will put you just where you need to be...so with that being said. I am venturing out to do my own thing Full time now!!

I have been doing unique wedding & church programs, for years now, along with obituaries, tickets, brochures, flyers, wedding & party invitations, resumes, and other business services. I will continue to do these things now, along with contracting myself out as a freelance administrative assistant or data entry clerk.

Hello Everyone...

For a few years it has been my desire to start a magazine company geared toward the everyday teen. Once my oldest daughter became a teenager, I realized that there really was no magazine that related to her, with the information that I felt she should be able to read being a beautiful African American teen. A magazine that was positive in nature that encouraged my daughter to attain her goals while at the same time reminding her that she was beautiful in her own skin.

The purpose of Shades of Brown the Magazine for Beautiful Teens of Color is to establish and maintain a positive magazine that caters to teens of color. In today’s society, it is imperative that teenagers have a resource that provides a positive outlook not only on life and situations that concern them, but also provides a medium where they can express themselves and obtain answers to questions that interest them. Shades of Brown will showcase the talents of teens of color while praising their success; they will be encouraged to turn their dreams into reality.

As the publisher of Shades of Brown, I am dedicated to establishing diversity initiative’s that promote a culture of inclusion within this organization as well as the industry at large. I also believe that such efforts may enhance the success of this magazine and satisfaction among the reader it serve.

Shades of Brown will focus on teens and young adults between the ages of 12 and 22. Although at 22 you are no longer a teenager, there will be sections in the magazine that provide information that would still be of great use to young adults.
