My name is D. Johnson, and S. Wilson. We heard your show today, it was inspirational we enjoyed it very much. Were trying to start a incorporation. The first section of our company includes an inmate mailing service, it hurts to say but "a lot of our friends and family are incarcerated." We met Michael at the Aventura mall in Miami where we go to sell our products at the weekly green market there. To be honest I had no idea who Michael was when I saw him, however he did stand out among the other thousands of people who pass through that area. I saw him from a quite a distance away, long before he saw me. Then I looked away & continued to tend to my soap both as I normally do on a Saturday afternoon. Next I looked up & Michael was right in front of my booth. He must have made a beeline directly to my booth, which was about half a football field away. We chatted for a few minutes, Michael bought a few soaps & said if he liked them he would be in touch (I still had no Idea who he was). Little did I know that this 5min meeting with this stranger would change my life forever. 3 days later we receive a call from Michael’s produces asking us to be on his National Show that has Millions & Millions of listeners. That was May 2nd 2007. Since then we have been invited back on 2 additional occasions with the most recent being 10/03/07.

Our African ancestors were stripped of their clothing, language, foods and more. But in their minds were lessons from their homeland. One of them was basketry. African slaves working on lowcountry plantations particularly in South Carolina, used local materials to replicate baskets they used in Africa. Today, my family and I carry on the tradition of sweetgrass basketmaking which has been passed down many generations in my family. My 82-year-old grandmother still makes and sells her baskets, too.

I bought three copies from the author a week ago. I gave to copies to my friends and i just finished reading my copy. This book is very touching. I can relate to "Black Like Me" poetry peice. What Safari Ann Jones went through with being very dark skinned and having very nappy hair is funny. Because I too went through the same thang. So Safari, you are not alone girl. Show your roots homegirl. I am 31 years old, and my name is Kasandra. My hair is nappy nappy nappy! I flaunt my natural hair every chance I get. I recomment this book for girls with nappy hair!

Whats going on family, I work at a middle school in Illinois where in the past year, the school was placed on the state watch list for poor attendance. This year I was hired to help tackel the attendance to get us off the watch list. Most of the students I work with are inner city youth and candy wont motivate them to stay in school. A wave of noose-related incidents is sweeping across the country. Black civil rights leaders are calling for a march at the Justice Department headquarters in Washington next month. Their agenda: to make the federal government prosecute the noose hangings as a hate crime. Last month, thousands of protesters marched in Jena, La. following the hanging of 3 nooses under a school tree. But even before that, nooses have been found at workplaces, government buildings and schools.

Hearing about it is devastating for Charles Hickman. In 2002, Charles was the only African-American working at an oil industry pipe coatings company in Conroe, Texas. Michigan State University Extension Journey 4-H Youth Mentoring is succeeding a 2nd year program in Muskegon County, MI. Today’s society, through media outlets, music and the fall of some high-profiled celebrity heroes, our children are influenced to make unhealthy choices. Our aim is to reduce the frequency and severity of delinquent behavior to provide each child a chance to make healthy choices to ensure their future. Journey 4-H Youth Mentoring Program provides matches for the youth, ages 8-17, with positive local adult role models. All youth are in the program voluntarily and are referred by probation officers, therapists, and other community agencies and organizations. Because of our mission, priority is given to youth who are currently in the court system.

The goal of this program is to be an ongoing program to lead up to long-term sustainable funding. The overall goal of the Journey 4-H Youth Mentoring Program is to increase the recidivism rate to decrease the youth returning to jail or probation. We strive to accomplish this through:

*Building a safer and healthier community. Mentors help improve the life of the youth within the communities by giving them the chance to look at their lives in a new way. This in turn reduces discipline problems in school, home and the community; increases positive youth and adult partnerships; creates a sense of belonging to the community; and assists the creation of making reachable goals for their futures. The great thing about mentoring is everyone has skills and experiences they can share with a young person.

*Creating opportunities for personal growth. Mentoring teaches mentors new ways of looking at issues and their own lives. Moreover, in working with young people, mentors can hone their professional and personal skills by teaching youth what they have to offer.

The benchmarks we hope to achieve through working with individual youth:
-To provide in the next twelve months are 15 successful matches.
-To place a strong impact on the community by bringing awareness of the needs of this program that will change the lives of the youth of tomorrow by providing them with skills to insure their future.
