Sage Jewels emerged into the world of retail in 2005 out of the vision of its owner owner/jewelry Designer Lisa Marie Glover in 2005 following the breast cancer diagnosis of her college roommate and best friend. An African-American Prep School Transformed
Laurinburg Institute, the nation’s oldest private Black Prep School, emerges from one of its darkest periods just in time to celebrate its 103rd birthday.

Few institutions have embodied African-American history as completely as Laurinburg Institute. Laurinburg Institute reflects a history of Excellence and Achievement. It is now the only Black institution of its kind in the United States. Started in 1904 by Emmanuel Monty and Tinny McDuffie, with only a small piece of swamp land and a dream of providing quality education and guidance for black children. That dream is being realized every day, but it has not been without a tremendous challenge.

The Laurinburg Institute is a private, non-sectarian preparatory school offering residential education in grades 9 through 12. Capacity enrollment is 135 boys and girls from all over the United States and many foreign countries.

The leadership of the School has remained in the McDuffie family through three generations. Frank H. McDuffie, Sr. son of Emmanuel and Tinny was President from 1953-1990 and was succeeded by his son Frank H.”Bishop”McDuffie. The family has truly dedicated their lives and committed themselves to the education and welfare of young men and women from all walks of life.

In 1904 at the request of Booker T. Washington by the parents of Dr. McDuffie, Laurinburg Institute is currently the only independent secondary boarding school predominantly African-American owned and operated in the U.S. for 103 years (1904-current) it served as the only independent secondary facility for African-American students in Scotland County.
Laurinburg Institute has played host to some of the most famous and influential African Americans of the 19th and 20th centuries. Dizzy Gillespie, the pre-eminent Black Jazz Musician, Sam Jones, Called "Mr. Clutch" by many of his peers, Sam Jones was one of the linchpins of the fabulous Boston juggernaut of the 1950s and 1960s. His uncannily accurate bank shots, lightning quickness, and cool demeanor helped the Celtics win 10 NBA Championships in the 12 years he played with the team. During his career Jones racked up 15,411 points at a 17.7 points per game clip, and shot .803 from the free-throw line. Selected to the All-NBA Second Team three times and an All-Star five times, he was elected to the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 1983, Charlie Scott His basketball pedigree, which took root on the campus of the University of North Carolina, is second to none. After a successful college career in which he helped kick start the Tar Heel hoops tradition as the school's first African-American starter, Scott played a key role on the US Olympic team in 1968. Then, after two years in the ABA in which he averaged 30.6 points per game, he joined the Phoenix of NBA in 1971, with whom he made the All-Star team three times in four seasons. Perhaps his greatest moment as a Celtic came once again on the visitor's court, this time in Phoenix. Scott paced Boston with a solid 25-point effort in the historic Game 5 against the Suns. He also added 11 rebounds, three assists, and five steals. Other notables, Laurinburg Institute Prep had 14 players sign NCAA Division I scholarships in November and will have 6 more sign in April. The Tigers might have as many as three players opt out of college and enter the NBA draft in June. The Tigers are led by 7-1 Ivan Chiriaev, who has indicated that he will certainly enter the NBA draft, 6-10 Memphis recruit Shawne Williams, 6-10 LSU recruit Magnum Rolle, 7-0 Memphis recruit Kareem Cooper, 6-4 Washington recruit Robert Sallie and 6-11 Iowa State recruit Kellen Lee. 6-3 guard Jamel White has signed with Nebraska, Mike Smith with Ole Miss, Mitch Mullis with Charlotte, Antonio Anderson with Memphis and Robert Dozier has signed also with Memphis. Several national recruiting analysts have called Laurinburg Prep the best prep team ever assembled.

Celebrating its 103rd anniversary this year, Laurinburg Institute continues to showcase the viability and promise of the small private, historically Black Prep. This anniversary comes at a time of uncertainty and financial hardship for many small Black institutions. Laurinburg itself only recently overcame arguably its largest financial crisis since the school began.

In 2007, the prep school was facing a 850,000.00 annual operating budget. However, A group of Laurinburg Institute Alumni pulled together and identified themselves as the, "Dream Team" and decided to launch a Fundraising campaign and title it, "Sewing Seeds for our 2nd Century." Since minimal time the "Dream Team" installed their faith, steps from God, and working together as a team and immediately began to make a difference by contributing their own monies of $1000.00 per team member, and the institution has since found its bearings under the covenant of God through tithing. Laurinburg Institute's financial turnaround has sparked a new sense of optimism about the future of the College Prep School.

Under the support of the "Dream Team", Board Members, as well as the McDuffie family Laurinburg Institute has taken on a new life and is poised to grow," speaks Arlene Crawford a successful Alumni of Laurinburg Institute and a "Dream Team" member.

“I would say on the broader institutional issues, The Dream Team, Board Members, as well as the McDuffie family has been very strong and positive on behalf of Laurinburg Institute. This collective group has taken a troubled institution, stabilized it, and gotten it in a position where it can begin to rebuild and have a positive future,” adds Arlene Crawford. Laurinburg Institute may not be as picturesque and visually impressive as some other small rural campuses in the state, like the local High School The buildings at Laurinburg are mostly brick concrete and sprawl across a flat spread in Scotland County. They project an austere, almost industrial look to the campus. But that cold, impersonal image is almost immediately dissolved by the palpable, family-oriented spirit that pervades the campus and manifests itself in the interactions among the faculty members, administrators and students.

It’s not unusual to see Mr. Frank H. Bishop McDuffie, Laurinburg’s President, and Headmaster winding his way through campus buildings, dispensing hugs and high-fives, teasing some students, and urging others to make appointments with him to discuss serious matters. Bishop conducts himself like the concerned Headmaster at an urban high school or the adult brother prodding younger siblings and cousins to do their best.
Arlene Crawford, a successful 1983 Alumni., says the personal, caring spirit of Bishop and his family had sparked her own intellectual and social growth. She says that spirit helped ease the transition from her city of Boston Massachusetts life to existence in isolated, rural Laurinburg NC.
Bishop and his family sets a strong example of how a president can prove a motivating force to students like herself.

Laurinburg’s faculty and staff radiate a can-do spirit that seems to be absorbed by the students. In contrast to the days when the prep school lost staff, enrollment dropped and low pay, administrators like Bishop can now talk confidently about prep school plans to build new dormitories to accommodate student enrollment growth. And they are stepping up efforts to secure fundraising funds to enhance the school campus and faculty.

Currently, Laurinburg enrolls 45 residential students and operates a continuing educational and athletic division that serves roughly between 45 to 60 students. Since fall 2007, tuition, fees and room and board for residential students have stayed consistent at $14,088.00 Ninety-five percent of Laurinburg Institute students rely on financial aid.

A complete reorganization of the school’s academic programs, combined with an aggressive fund-raising campaign, was necessary to start the healing process at Laurinburg Institute.
Laurinburg Institute plans to host a number of alumni events during the spring, summer and fall, aimed at spotlighting the work of the history of Laurinburg Institute and the future of the school. As a representative and Dream Team member I feel that Laurinburg Institute will transform itself over recent years.
Laurinburg’s ability to attract resources, expertise and funding reflects the school’s historic stature and its importance to the nation.

An African-American Prep School Transformed
Laurinburg Institute, the nation’s oldest private Black Prep School, emerges from one of its darkest periods just in time to celebrate its 103rd birthday.

Few institutions have embodied African-American history as completely as Laurinburg Institute. Laurinburg Institute reflects a history of Excellence and Achievement. It is now the only Black institution of its kind in the United States. Started in 1904 by Emmanuel Monty and Tinny McDuffie, with only a small piece of swamp land and a dream of providing quality education and guidance for black children. That dream is being realized every day, but it has not been without a tremendous challenge.

The Laurinburg Institute is a private, non-sectarian preparatory school offering residential education in grades 9 through 12. Capacity enrollment is 135 boys and girls from all over the United States and many foreign countries.

The leadership of the School has remained in the McDuffie family through three generations. Frank H. McDuffie, Sr. son of Emmanuel and Tinny was President from 1953-1990 and was succeeded by his son Frank H.”Bishop”McDuffie. The family has truly dedicated their lives and committed themselves to the education and welfare of young men and women from all walks of life.

In 1904 at the request of Booker T. Washington by the parents of Dr. McDuffie, Laurinburg Institute is currently the only independent secondary boarding school predominantly African-American owned and operated in the U.S. for 103 years (1904-current) it served as the only independent secondary facility for African-American students in Scotland County.
Laurinburg Institute has played host to some of the most famous and influential African Americans of the 19th and 20th centuries. Dizzy Gillespie, the pre-eminent Black Jazz Musician, Sam Jones, Called "Mr. Clutch" by many of his peers, Sam Jones was one of the linchpins of the fabulous Boston juggernaut of the 1950s and 1960s. His uncannily accurate bank shots, lightning quickness, and cool demeanor helped the Celtics win 10 NBA Championships in the 12 years he played with the team. During his career Jones racked up 15,411 points at a 17.7 points per game clip, and shot .803 from the free-throw line. Selected to the All-NBA Second Team three times and an All-Star five times, he was elected to the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 1983, Charlie Scott His basketball pedigree, which took root on the campus of the University of North Carolina, is second to none. After a successful college career in which he helped kick start the Tar Heel hoops tradition as the school's first African-American starter, Scott played a key role on the US Olympic team in 1968. Then, after two years in the ABA in which he averaged 30.6 points per game, he joined the Phoenix of NBA in 1971, with whom he made the All-Star team three times in four seasons. Perhaps his greatest moment as a Celtic came once again on the visitor's court, this time in Phoenix. Scott paced Boston with a solid 25-point effort in the historic Game 5 against the Suns. He also added 11 rebounds, three assists, and five steals. Other notables, Laurinburg Institute Prep had 14 players sign NCAA Division I scholarships in November and will have 6 more sign in April. The Tigers might have as many as three players opt out of college and enter the NBA draft in June. The Tigers are led by 7-1 Ivan Chiriaev, who has indicated that he will certainly enter the NBA draft, 6-10 Memphis recruit Shawne Williams, 6-10 LSU recruit Magnum Rolle, 7-0 Memphis recruit Kareem Cooper, 6-4 Washington recruit Robert Sallie and 6-11 Iowa State recruit Kellen Lee. 6-3 guard Jamel White has signed with Nebraska, Mike Smith with Ole Miss, Mitch Mullis with Charlotte, Antonio Anderson with Memphis and Robert Dozier has signed also with Memphis. Several national recruiting analysts have called Laurinburg Prep the best prep team ever assembled.

Celebrating its 103rd anniversary this year, Laurinburg Institute continues to showcase the viability and promise of the small private, historically Black Prep. This anniversary comes at a time of uncertainty and financial hardship for many small Black institutions. Laurinburg itself only recently overcame arguably its largest financial crisis since the school began.

In 2007, the prep school was facing a 850,000.00 annual operating budget. However, A group of Laurinburg Institute Alumni pulled together and identified themselves as the, "Dream Team" and decided to launch a Fundraising campaign and title it, "Sewing Seeds for our 2nd Century." Since minimal time the "Dream Team" installed their faith, steps from God, and working together as a team and immediately began to make a difference by contributing their own monies of $1000.00 per team member, and the institution has since found its bearings under the covenant of God through tithing. Laurinburg Institute's financial turnaround has sparked a new sense of optimism about the future of the College Prep School.

Under the support of the "Dream Team", Board Members, as well as the McDuffie family Laurinburg Institute has taken on a new life and is poised to grow," speaks Arlene Crawford a successful Alumni of Laurinburg Institute and a "Dream Team" member.

“I would say on the broader institutional issues, The Dream Team, Board Members, as well as the McDuffie family has been very strong and positive on behalf of Laurinburg Institute. This collective group has taken a troubled institution, stabilized it, and gotten it in a position where it can begin to rebuild and have a positive future,” adds Arlene Crawford. Laurinburg Institute may not be as picturesque and visually impressive as some other small rural campuses in the state, like the local High School The buildings at Laurinburg are mostly brick concrete and sprawl across a flat spread in Scotland County. They project an austere, almost industrial look to the campus. But that cold, impersonal image is almost immediately dissolved by the palpable, family-oriented spirit that pervades the campus and manifests itself in the interactions among the faculty members, administrators and students.

It’s not unusual to see Mr. Frank H. Bishop McDuffie, Laurinburg’s President, and Headmaster winding his way through campus buildings, dispensing hugs and high-fives, teasing some students, and urging others to make appointments with him to discuss serious matters. Bishop conducts himself like the concerned Headmaster at an urban high school or the adult brother prodding younger siblings and cousins to do their best.
Arlene Crawford, a successful 1983 Alumni., says the personal, caring spirit of Bishop and his family had sparked her own intellectual and social growth. She says that spirit helped ease the transition from her city of Boston Massachusetts life to existence in isolated, rural Laurinburg NC.
Bishop and his family sets a strong example of how a president can prove a motivating force to students like herself.

Laurinburg’s faculty and staff radiate a can-do spirit that seems to be absorbed by the students. In contrast to the days when the prep school lost staff, enrollment dropped and low pay, administrators like Bishop can now talk confidently about prep school plans to build new dormitories to accommodate student enrollment growth. And they are stepping up efforts to secure fundraising funds to enhance the school campus and faculty.

Currently, Laurinburg enrolls 45 residential students and operates a continuing educational and athletic division that serves roughly between 45 to 60 students. Since fall 2007, tuition, fees and room and board for residential students have stayed consistent at $14,088.00 Ninety-five percent of Laurinburg Institute students rely on financial aid.

A complete reorganization of the school’s academic programs, combined with an aggressive fund-raising campaign, was necessary to start the healing process at Laurinburg Institute.
Laurinburg Institute plans to host a number of alumni events during the spring, summer and fall, aimed at spotlighting the work of the history of Laurinburg Institute and the future of the school. As a representative and Dream Team member I feel that Laurinburg Institute will transform itself over recent years.
Laurinburg’s ability to attract resources, expertise and funding reflects the school’s historic stature and its importance to the nation.

I tried for 2 hours to get through to Michael show. The show that he put businesses on blast. I would like for him to hear my story of when I had enough. You see I never wanted to be corporate I wanted to be part of corporate. I went to college and got a BS degree. I felt that it was enough and did not want anymore formal education, but sometimes it's not what you want, it is what God has planned for you. So one day I felt in my heart that I needed to pursue my masters degree. My husband was getting out of the military and I want to support him emotionally and financial while he got his degree, the way he did for me. So I finished my masters program in 11 mos, 2 mos before he retired from the army. I thought that I would get this degree and the jobs would be pouring in. All I had to do is send out my resume. I was so wrong. You see I was slinging a double edged sword. My credentials made me over qualified and my experience made me under qualified. I couldn't even get an interview. Until one day when I just asked God what was it I couldn't even get a job making $24000 a year, (credentials made me over qualified). Then I went to Office Depot put in an application and ask for $10.00 per hour. They offer me 8.50 and gave me 8.25. But the hiring manager hired me over the phone(pending my background check and my drug test) after a brief phone interview. I had never heard of anyone getting hired over the phone, so I figured I better take the job. funds were getting low. I prayed about it and in my spirit I felt that God had this planned, not ever believing that becoming an entrepreneur was what he wanted for me, but I settled into my position looking forward to moving up within the company, and one day I realized that my boss,(a black female) was threaten by me and all I was trying to do is my job and my job was to make her look good, then she could move up and in the process I could move up. I may have had the credentials,but she had years of experience. I never knocked her or her experience, I love my people and I always try to be encouraging to them. But for her to do what she did, I just could not take, so I decided to step out on faith and to do what I do so well, but I am doing it for myself. I stepped out on faith and faith will lead me. I am a truck driver living and working in the city of Chicago and am fed up with struggling week to week to make ends meet. I work 65-70 hours a week consistently with only 34 hours to myself for time off. I truly feel that this is modern day slavery and have to desperately fire my boss and become my own. The problem is I am not sure how to do just that under my circumstances ! I am a 32 year old black man married with 4 kids and just last year purchased a home. My wife, I like to often refer to as "the female Bernie Mac", because she took in her sister's 3 kids which had no where to turn due to their mother's situation. We also have her father living under the same roof as well due to his age, health concerns and, my wife thinking this would be a good idea. Needless to say I am drowning!

To Whom It May Concern: I’m writing this letter to tell you’ll of small town southern experience of growing up in the south among school segregation until I was going to the 6th grade. I’m 50 years old and spent 20 years in the Military. When I was growing up, we did not question why we had to go to the balcony in the movie theater, why we had to go to the back of a restaurant to order or pick up food from a small window, especially when one of the men from church was the cook, go to the laundry mat with a sign displayed on the front “colored only” and to find two inches of water on the floor, the local swimming pools, one for white only and the other one for colored only. Back then, in their frame of mind, that’s the way it was since we didn’t have to bow our heads anymore and could walk the streets as we pleased. Back then, we had come a long way. I want to approach a subject that I’ve been looking for in the media for a long time. I don’t think that we will progress any time soon, as a people because of the NAACP is the only anything in the States that can get away with calling us colored people. When and if they ever change their title to National Advancement for People of Color, then I will support them. To be truthful, I rather for someone to call me the “N” Word, which we call each other, as friends and family but you never, heard a buddy say to you “come hear little colored boy”. Someone said to me one day in a debate that NAACP was formed by a white man, that’s ok but we need to change that Advancement of Colored People because back then, you never saw a sign that read “Blacks Only”, Just Colored Only. Let’s start in our back yard before can we can go any further. Mike Vick received much TV coverage because they see it as another colored boy going down and JENA6 is America and since it’s a poor income family, the media class them as “poor colored folks”, next to trailer trash. Call someone (Spike Lee) who is not afraid to piss people off, to air this to help the Brothers and Sisters of Jena. These are Christian people who need help from whence we came. Why in America that Telemunda TV will perhaps be the first to air the Jena6 instead of CBS, ABC, and WSB and so on? Just speaking my mind in Georgia.

This is a call to action. This is not about no rallies, this is not about no marching, it

This is the REVOLUTION and it will not be TELEVISED

A new set of reports has hit the market. Designed to bring the Black Community
into a new consciousness.

Information based on a recent survey where over 95% of Black people surveyed feel
there is a serious problem in the Black Community.

The problems are as follow to name a few:
• No unity
• No respect for one another. Children cursing in front of adults with no
regard to who hears them.
• Adults cursing with no regard to who hears them especially when there are
children around.
• Selling drugs to people in our own community.
• The taking of drugs
• Over ONE MILLION Black people in the prison system where there is only a
little over TWO MILLION. That is more than half while only being 12% of
the population.
• The killing of one another over a corner that they do not own. So they can
make money by harming people in their own community. Drugs and guns
bought from people outside our community to be used in our community for
our destruction.
• Internalizing the problems caused by people outside of our Community and
taking it out on people in our community. The following examples were
given:

a) All the riots were caused by anger created through injustices done
against our Community. All the destructions were done with in our
own Community. Therefore getting mad at others and taking it out on
ourselves.
I. Destroying property
II. Destroying businesses
III. Destroying where we live and eat and sleep
IV. Having to stay in the mess after we created it.
b) Never destroying the property of the people who caused the problem
c) Another example people refuse to acknowledge Al Sharpton as a
serious candidate for President. This information from Black People:

Not an issue of whether he would be a good President or not comments
were made about his hair and lack of knowledge. So you end up with
your current President. Wow see the lack of unity. Whether Mr. Sharpton
would have been good or not we will not know because we as a
community would not give him a chance. Of course the white community
counts on these kinds of actions. It keeps us separated and them in total
control.

These are some of the issues that will be addressed in the reports “Your Life Your
Call” with some solutions of how to break the Psychological chains of warfare that
has been placed on us since Christopher Columbus first attempted to send slaves
(hostages) back to his homeland back in 1493. Almost 600 years ago.
And the Portuguese actually kidnapped over 235 Africans and sold them into
hostage back in 1444. 200 years earlier then was thought. Followed by other
European countries (Dufy, W. Sugar Blues Warner Books 1975 pg.32) Actually in
the 1600’s is when they showed up on this land. The land of the FREE as hostages.
These hostages were bought and sold, beat and tortured, maimed and just some of
the most unthinkable events that can happen to a human being.

This author believes everyone should visit the Black Wax Museum in Baltimore,
MD. It has one of the best exhibits of our time here in or on this land, depending on
your perspective.

That was just a little history lesson on the reasons to avoid such things as use of the
“N” word in any aspect.

The reports will hopefully help us understand the need to build Self-Esteem,
Self-Worth, and Self-Respect. Show signs where it is missing, not tear anyone down
only build everyone up.

And, taking action is something that Tehuti does very well. During the 1990’s, Tehuti conducted Hip Hop Culture workshops at D.C. Public Schools and has also worked with youth in Child & Family Services and Juvenile Justice systems. “I once worked at a school that did not have a library, so I pulled together a bunch of my own books and started a makeshift school library.” Tehuti is also no stranger to the music industry, handling the management, bookings, and promotions for established artists.

On October 2, Tehuti will also release the weluvblackwomen.com website and two of his children’s books. The website includes historic facts about the great accomplishments of women of African descent worldwide. The children’s books are entitled Pretty Little Girl and Black People Read Well. Pretty Little Girl was written to encourage young Black girls to believe that they are beautiful. Black People Read Well was written to promote reading and writing to elementary school children, and to also help parents instill reading and writing skills in their children.

Tehuti will be one of the featured authors at the National Association of Black Female Executives in Music and Entertainment (NABFEME) Literary Lounge in Charlotte, North Carolina October 3-7. “Those who protest Hip Hop as a culture and rap music as an influence on multi-media outlets should equally be the loudest supporters of what I am doing.” Tehuti asserts, “beyond criticizing lyrics, consumers need to support positive messages and artists must not be afraid to step up to the plate and be innovative. And, to quote the words of the song, So if you got a lady or momma or sister or daughter, I know you love that. We Luv Black Women!”

Not many people who listen to the Michael Baisden Show are starting their own TV network, but we are!

It's called Indie Dish. It will be a forum for independent artists of all types, (music, films, tv) and also screenwriters, producers, directors, animators etc. to showcase their various talents and increase their exposure. We're taking the concept of an MTV, BET, VH1, HBO, etc, and bringing it to the local level, and it is all black owned and operated. We are presently seeking high quality video content from all independent artists. If they do not have it and want it, we can produce it for them!

We are also giving small local advertisers a chance to be on TV that may have been out of their reach in the past, while simultaneously reaching an audience that they may not have been able to reach before.

Because my husband and I did not have the complete funds ourselves to start our first business, we went into business with my brother and his wife and bought into the Rita's Water Ice Franchise. And oh Yes, it's proven to be profitable, very. This I'm sure will be a great spring board for starting our very own. My advice to anyone who is putting off starting your own business, but have some reluctance due to finances, reach out to serious family members who are committed and can hold to their end of the financial bargain. Other cultures have been doing it for years......

The only goal not attainable is the one not attempted...

We stretch our hands to help.

We strive to only use safe, all natural products in our care packages, so we were thrilled to see so many businesses that offer these. Our first campaign was set to launch on Oct. 1, 2007. It was for care packages for deployed soldiers and wounded soldiers in hospitals. We had suppliers lined up, the campaign flyers ready for print-everything was ready to go. Lo and behold, we received an e-mail from the Red Cross Dallas Chapter (we had been in correspondence with them since as early as June, when we first requested the opportunity to pitch our proposal) from Linda Lipscomb telling us that they were not going to participate in our campaign. We had never even heard her name mentioned once during all of our correspondence. We are devastated. Not only had we poured our hearts and souls into this project, but we lost credibility with those we had already shared this exciting news with and our vendors who were expecting a good public response to the campaign. This after months of going back and forth with a member of their organization, Alberto Guzman, only to discover that he did not have authority to approve the campaign. We don't know if it was just a matter of ignorance on his part about internal procedure or not, but the Red Cross did not give a second thought to how this affected our business. So not only did we lose out, but some soldiers who would have been happy to receive those care packages have lost out as well. We included their e-mail to us below(on the day we were set to launch) because We come from corporate backgrounds and we want others to know that big non-profit organizations can be just as harsh as big corporations. The really tough thing is that the reasons for rejecting the proposal were things that could have been revised. But instead, it was just rejected. So not only do we have to deal with the normal difficulties of starting a business, we have to deal with lost credibility as well. I told my husband that I was finished, that I was tired because I had worked so hard on this, because I knew that when people saw that blacks were running such a major effort, we had to be up to standard. But the living your dreams segment today has encouraged me not to give up, because no one can steal your dream unless you allow them to.
