Let's get serious about what really matters. Obesity is the second preventable cause of death (smoking is still # 1, but it is being quickly overtaken). Not into other people's facts? Well, take a good look around you. Overconsumption is not good for the people or the earth. Our environment is giving us major messages; our nature's weather, our rates of diseases and chronic illness. Point blank, we as homo sapiens have the responsibility to look, know, understand and feel.

I have been organic for over twelve years. I am 31 and I have 4 daughters. I have researched and read and read and researched. And most importantly, I have lived and tried and learned. Global climate change phemonon is real, the overall lack of health and vitality amongst the world's population is real.

By no means am I perfect, I cope with health issues, I struggle with emotional and social issues, my spirit craves constant enlightenment in the way of truth. I am willing to share my whole story to encourage healing and foster well-being in others; because this also helps me along my way.

I offered tours of the health food stores in the local Columbia, SC metropolitian area. I didn't get as many intrested people as I'd like, so I am waitressing for a minute at Harbon Inn Seafood. I will help you if you need me to be your guide into the world of "health by organics."

I am not vegan, or vegetarian. I don't promote soy foods, supplement dependency, or totally raw diets. Eat steamed green beans everyday as much as possible. Add nothing else mut enough water to just soften them If there is water left over drink it.

No pasta, white bread, sodas (no not even diet ones or organic ones) not refined whie sugar and no potatoes. Make greens and fresh organic veggies the star of every meal. Detoxes are best done with meals consisting of one fruit or vegetable for at least 3 days but a week would be great. Give fruits 1 hour in between before digesting a different fruit. Same with veggies. No salt while on detoxm not condiments of anykind except Nama Shoyu (raw fermented soy sauce, raw, organic vinegars if you don't have a yeast problem, or maybe on green veggies (not starchy ones like corn, potatoes, squash) some raw sesame butter (aka tahini), raw nut butters and freshly grounded flax seeds, which can be ground in the blender and stored in the back (coldest) part of the frig. This is a wealth of information!! For someone who is truly new to changing old negative health habits and has a desire to start this journey of healthy living, I don't know where to start. Most Vitamin nutrients on the market today use stripped down synthetic vitamins rather than whole vitamins straight from vegetables and fruits like our vitamin! Why? Synthetic vitamins are much cheaper to produce.

Taking the synthetic form of Vitamin E is proven to actually suck vitamins and minerals right out of the bones which can do more harm than good to the body! Once again, most vitamin supplements today are using all the synthetic vitamins because they are cheap to manufacture.

Whole Vitamins are critical for maintaining good health!

According to Taber's Medical Dictionary, vitamins are essential for normal metabolism, growth and life of the body. They are indispensable for the maintenance of health. Up until now there has been some controversy regarding the necessity to supplement vitamins back into the diet. The Journal of American Medical Association concluded from a study that every individual should take a multivitamin everyday, thus ending that controversy.

Bottom line, getting the proper nutrients and micronutrients each day is critical to maintaining good health.

Let me explain by using vitamin C as an example. Ascorbic acid is often sold as vitamin C, and yet it is only a chemically derived fraction of the whole food vitamin. As it is found in food, vitamin C is a complete complex which is actually made up of ascorbic acid plus rutin, bioflavonoids, K factor and J factors - as well as other substances that no human experiment has been able to replicate. You must have all of these fractions in order for the Vitamin to be complete.

In order for the body to absorb and use a vitamin, all of the parts of the complex must be present. That means that in order to use the fractionated form of the vitamin, the body must first supply the other parts of the whole food complex. If ascorbic acid alone is ingested, the body must complete the complex by robbing its own collagen tissue of the elements that are missing in the "vitamin C" you supplied.

This process is rarely complete and can even cause increased deficiencies. A published study by Doctors Vinson and Bose showed this to be the case. They found that vitamin C from citrus extract was absorbed 35 percent more than ascorbic acid. Their conclusion was that; "Although natural and synthetic ascorbic acids are chemically identical, citrus fruits contain bioflavonoids such as naringin and hesperidin as well as carbohydrates and proteins that might affect the bioavailability."

Likewise, other vitamins have been shown in study after study to be more effective in their whole food form. One study by J.A. Vinson and C. Hsu, published in Medical Science Research, found whole food vitamin E and vitamin A to be more bioavailable than isolated, synthetic forms of these vitamins. In the case of vitamin A, results showed the food base product was retained 9.4 times more than the synthetic form. Synthetic vitamins simply cannot measure up to the real thing

Hyssopus officinalis

Labiatae

Habitat: A common garden plant.

Part Used: Dried aerial parts.

Constituents:

Terpenoids; including marrubiin, oleanolic and ursolicacids
Volatile oil, composed mainly of camphor, pinocaphone, thujone, isopinocamphone, with [[alpha]]- and [[beta]]-pinene, [[alpha]]-terpinene, linalool, bornylacetate and many others
Flavonoids, including diosmin and hesperidin.
Miscellaneous: hyssopin (a glucoside), tannins 5-8%, resin.

Actions: Anti-spasmodic, expectorant, diaphoretic, nervine, anti-inflammatory, carminative, hepatic, emmenagogue.

Indications: Hyssop has an interesting range of uses which are largely attributable to the anti-spasmodic action of the volatile oil. It is used in coughs, bronchitis and chronic catarrh. Its diaphoretic properties explain its use in the common cold. As a nervine it may be used in anxiety states, hysteria and petit mal (a form of epilepsy).

King's Dispensatory considers it a " stimulant, aromatic, carminative and tonic. Principally used in quinsy and other sore throats, as a gargle, combined with sage and alum, in infusion sweetened with honey. Also recommended in asthma, coughs, and other affections of the chest, as an expectorant. The leaves applied to bruises, speedily relieve the pain, and disperse every spot or mark from the affected parts."

Combinations: It may be combined with White Horehound and Coltsfoot in the treatment of coughs and bronchitis. For the common cold it may be mixed with Boneset, Elder Flower and Peppermint.

Preparation and dosage: Infusion: pour a cup of boiling water onto l-2 teaspoonfuls of the dried herb and leave to infuse for l0-l5 minutes. This should be drunk three times a day. Tincture: Take l-4 ml of the tincture three times a day.

An essential oil is a liquid that is distilled (most often by steam or water) from the leaves, stems, flowers, bark, roots, and/or other elements of a plant.

Essential oils, are not really 'oily' feeling at all. Most are clear, but some, such as patchouli, orange and lemongrass are amber or yellow in color. Essential oils are highly concentrated and a little goes a very long way.

Essential oils are not the same as perfume or fragrance oils. Where, the theraputic oils are derived from the true plants, perfume oils are artificially created fragrances or contain artificial substances and do not offer the therapeutic benefits that pure essential oils offer.

The chemical composition and aroma of essential oils can provide many valuable psychological and physical therapeutic benefits.

Essential oils are most often used by diluting them with a carrier oil (sweet almond oil, apricot kernel oil or grapeseed oil) and then applying this blend to the skin for absorption. They are too strong to be use directly on the skin without dilution.

Careful inhalation of the oils can also provide therapeutic benefit when the oil molecules enter the lungs and are absorbed into the bloodstream.

These wonderful oils can often be purchased as blends of several different oils. The advantage of buying a blend of pure oils is that you can save money. You do not have to buy every essential oil individually. The disadvantage is that you will have no control over the blend because you did not mix it yourself nor can you reliably mix the blend with other oils.

Peanuts and Peanut Butter

While I was never a big peanut butter fan, I did enjoy eating salted peanuts and boiled peanuts from time to time. But because both contained excessive amounts of salt (man-made salt), I usually suffered headaches as a result. Luckily the salt got my attention before all the other things associated with peanut consumption.

My father’s side of the family was from Mississippi and they had a little delicacy they used to make from time to time. They would pour a large bag of raw (uncooked) peanuts into a large pot, fill it up with water, and bring it to a boil. While boiling, they would literally add a half a box (or damn near the whole box of salt) to the peanuts and water and stir continually. After an hour (or perhaps two, as it’s been years since I made them myself), you let the peanuts cool down; and at room temperature, you can eat them. They were very delicious due to the salt taste. Because they were boiled, the peanuts were soft.

This was a nice delicacy for us growing up, but it taught me very early lessons of too much salt as I experienced headaches after eating a lot of these boiled salted peanuts.

The astrological sign ‘Taurus’ has a connection to sodium; too little or too much sodium will do us in negatively. I have learned this my entire life thus far on Earth.

It’s also funny when I think back on the times when my father or uncles were making this delicacy and while pouring a lot of salt into the pot they would always look at you (the children present in the kitchen) and warn you that “too much salt ain’t good for you, it’ll give you high blood pressure.” But despite this sound medical advice, it didn’t stop them from pouring half a box of that poisonous Morton’s brand table salt, the worst salt on the market, into the boiling peanuts.

It’s funny when I think about my childhood days in South Los Angeles, Compton, Lynwood, and Watts, California, because I remember how grown-ups always gave sound health advice to us children (my cousins, my siblings, and myself) but never applied such health advice to them selves. You’d hear: “Don’t ya’ll ever smoke! Smoking is bad for you!” But the person (aunt or uncle) saying this always had a cigarette in their mouth while giving the advice.

You’d also hear (especially from Uncle Arthur Lee): “Don’t ya’ll drink alcohol! Alcohol will mess your mind up!” And as children, we’d be like, “Uncle Arthur Lee, then why you drinking?” Uncle Arthur Lee would then get very mad at us and curse us out.

The above reminds me of a scene in a favorite movie of mines, Bill Duke’s “Deep Cover” when Larry Fishburne’s father was about to rob a store during Christmas time in the very beginning of the movie. Before he goes into the store to rob it for cash, he snorts some cocaine (or some drug) and then looks at his son and tells him “Boy, don’t you ever do this, you hear me?” This scene was so funny to me because it always triggers flashbacks of my father and my aunts and uncles and how they too always gave sound health advice while they themselves were doing something unsound to their own health simultaneously.

Growing up in the hood, we learned firsthand that with adults, its “do as I say, not as I do.”

Yes, I used to enjoy eating peanuts until I learned of the deleterious effects of this little nut.

I used to enjoy Cracker Jack, chocolate nutty ice cream bars, Hershey’s chocolate bars with peanuts, Reese’s peanut butter cups, Mr. Good Bar chocolate bar, and just about everything else that had peanuts in it.

Health Risks of Peanut Butter

Number one, the peanut, of all nuts, is very hard on the digestive system. I know they taste good and certain sporting events (i.e. baseball) may not be the same without them; but nevertheless, they are hard on the digestion.

In addition to being hard on the digestive system, peanuts contain a carcinogen. This carcinogen is called an ‘aflotoxin’ and has been found in virtually all peanut butter brands on the market:

“A study was performed by Consumers Union showed that the major brands such as Jif, Peter Pan, and Skippy had less of the aflotoxin than store brands. The biggest offender turned out to be the freshly ground peanut butter in health food stores, which had ten times the levels of the major brands. The U.S. government allows no more than 20 parts per billion (ppb) of aflotoxin, which members of the health field feel is too high. According to Consumers Union, eating levels that contain an average of 2 ppb of aflotoxin every 10 days will result in a cancer risk of 7 in a million. This is a higher risk that exists from most pesticides in foods.” – Dr. Myles H. Bader

Peanuts, if not masticated well, can lodge in the intestines and contribute to diverticulitis and diverticulosis. So if you eat peanuts or will continue to eat them, make sure to masticate (chew) them well.

Peanut butter also contains hydrogenated oil. The process of hydrogenation keeps the oil in suspension. Hydrogenation made peanut butter one of America’s most popular foods. However, hydrogenation plays a role in the development of major diseases that impair overall health and wellbeing.

Beanut butter is not a better substitute for peanut butter. Beanut butter is really soybean butter and I do not advocate a lot of soy consumption though it is a favorite product in health circles and the number one transitional food for the majority of vegan and vegetarians.

Soy allows the average vegan to enjoy a good burger without eating dead cow’s flesh (beef) as well as eating substitute versions of many former beloved meat products, i.e. chicken nuggets, breakfast sausage patties, turkey, bologna salami, ham, etc.

However, soy too is hard on the digestive tract and that’s why I advocate eating only a little soy; and if you can do without soy products, then do so!

One of the worst oils to consume or use for cooking is peanut oil. It ranks with cottenseed oil, canola oil, and palm kernel oil as deleterious and insalubrious cooking oils. Insalubrious oils such as peanut oil damage the myelin sheath in the brain and causes nerve damage over time. However, peanut oil is far better or salubrious than cottonseed, canola, and soybean oil.

Peanut sauce is a favorite product in Asian culture. Thai restaurants use peanut sauce to top some of their dishes and also use it as a salad dressing. I have noticed that peanut sauces are very sweet due to the use of white table sugar, which really makes peanut sauce one to avoid, at least by health conscious individuals. If you eat peanut sauce just a few times a year, like when you dine at a Thai restaurant occasionally, there’s really no major cause for concern. But if you eat a lot of this stuff coupled with other peanut products, then you’re putting yourself at risk over time.

Origins of Peanut Butter

Peanut butter was invented by George Washington Carver (1864-1943), an American botanist and educator who did wonders with the peanut and who had over 300 uses for the nut. But it was Dr. Ambrose Straub of St. Louis, Missouri, who in 1890 made a batch of peanut butter for elderly patients who could not chew so well, that got peanut butter but its fame. He made the batch of peanut butter for purposes of protein.

Dr. Straub went on to patent a peanut grinding mill in 1903 and one year later peanut butter was introduced to the public in the United States at the 1904 St. Louis World’s Fair.

Facts About Peanut Butter

Peanut butter must be at least 90% peanuts to use the term “peanut butter.”

More than 50% of the peanut crop in the United States goes for peanut butter production.

Myths About Peanuts

Contrary to the individuals who believe such due to theological and religious beliefs (contracts, agreements) exclusively, eating nuts (including peanuts) do not take five years off your life (as if this could really be measured). No scientific data or evidence exists to support such assertion.

Peanut Butter Alternatives

Today, we have a variety of exceptional peanut butter substitutes on the market today that can be found at most good health food stores (i.e., Whole Foods Market, Nature Mart, New Frontiers, Wild Oats, Sevenanda, Papa John’s, Natural Grocer, etc.).

Alternative and healthier butters include hemp seed butter, almond butter, hazelnut butter, pistachio butter, walnut butter, and cashew butter.

I used to make hemp seed butter for my daughter, Layla, when she was a baby and she loved it. Hemp seed butter by far would have to be the best alternative butter on the market that you could consume. It is a great source of amino acids (for purposes of protein), contains all 3 beneficial essential fatty acids (Omega 3, Omega 6, and Omega 9), and contains moderate amounts of minerals and trace elements. It has a great taste as well!

Almond butter is also a great tasting butter, as well as cashew butter.

These butters are great for sandwiches, for crackers (whole grain type crackers), and vegetable sticks.

They are not hard on the digestive system like peanuts.

If you don’t live in a large city or major metropolis in the U.S., you can contact certain manufactures and inquire about getting bottles directly delivered to your door.

WASHINGTON - Americans born after Dec. 1, 1964, will have to get more secure driver's licenses in the next six years under ambitious post-9/11 security rules to be unveiled Friday by federal officials.

The Homeland Security Department has spent years crafting the final regulations for the REAL ID Act, a law designed to make it harder for terrorists, illegal immigrants and con artists to get government-issued identification. The effort once envisioned to take effect in 2008 has been pushed back in the hopes of winning over skeptical state officials.

Even with more time, more federal help and technical advances, REAL ID still faces stiff opposition from civil liberties groups.

To address some of those concerns, the government now plans to phase in a secure ID initiative that Congress passed into law in 2005. Now, DHS plans a key deadline in 2011 — when federal authorities hope all states will be in compliance — and then further measures to be enacted three years later, according to congressional staffers who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because an announcement had not yet been made. DHS officials briefed legislative aides on the details late Thursday.

Without discussing details, Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff promoted the final rules for REAL ID during a meeting Thursday with an advisory council.

"We worked very closely with the states in terms of developing a plan that I think will be inexpensive, reasonable to implement and produce the results," he said. "This is a win-win. As long as people use driver's licenses to identify themselves for whatever reason there's no reason for those licenses to be easily counterfeited or tampered with."

In order to make the plan more appealing to cost-conscious states, federal authorities drastically reduced the expected cost from $14.6 billion to $3.9 billion, a 73 percent decline, according to Homeland Security officials familiar with the plan.

The American Civil Liberties Union has fiercely objected to the effort, particularly the sharing of personal data among government agencies. The DHS and other officials say the only way to make sure an ID is safe is to check it against secure government data; critics like the ACLU say that creates a system that is more likely to be infiltrated and have its personal data pilfered.

In its written objection to the law, the ACLU claims REAL ID amounts to the "first-ever national identity card system," which "would irreparably damage the fabric of American life."

The Sept. 11 attacks were the main motivation for the changes.

The hijacker-pilot who flew into the Pentagon, Hani Hanjour, had a total of four driver's licenses and ID cards from three states. The DHS, which was created in response to the attacks, has created a slogan for REAL ID: "One driver, one license."

By 2014, anyone seeking to board an airplane or enter a federal building would have to present a REAL ID-compliant driver's license, with the notable exception of those more than 50 years old, Homeland Security officials said.

The over-50 exemption was created to give states more time to get everyone new licenses, and officials say the risk of someone in that age group being a terrorist, illegal immigrant or con artist is much less. By 2017, even those over 50 must have a REAL ID-compliant card to board a plane.

Among other details of the REAL ID plan:

_The traditional driver's license photograph would be taken at the beginning of the application instead of the end so that should someone be rejected for failure to prove identity and citizenship, the applicant's photo would be kept on file and checked in the future if that person attempted to con the system again.

_The cards will have three layers of security measures but will not contain microchips as some had expected. States will be able to choose from a menu which security measures they will put in their cards.

Over the next year, the government expects all states to begin checking both the Social Security numbers and immigration status of license applicants.

Most states currently check Social Security numbers and about half check immigration status. Some, like New York, Virginia, North Carolina and California, already have implemented many of the security measures envisioned in REAL ID. In California, for example, officials expect the only major change to adopt the first phase would be to take the photograph at the beginning of the application process instead of the end.

After the Social Security and immigration status checks become nationwide practice, officials plan to move on to more expansive security checks, including state DMV offices checking with the State Department to verify those applicants who use passports to get a driver's license, verifying birth certificates and checking with other states to ensure an applicant doesn't have more than one license.

A handful of states have already signed written agreements indicating plans to comply with REAL ID. Seventeen others, though, have passed legislation or resolutions objecting to it, often based on concerns about the billions of dollars such extra security is expected to cost.

I have a 17 year old son who was diagnosed as ADHD way back as a small child. We moved from Brooklyn, NY to the DC area when he was in kindergarden and initially I resisted medication. Well, long story short, I finally gave in because I went through numerous babysitters and calls from schools from elementary school all the way to present. But it's got to stop somewhere. When my son was younger, we lead much more healthy lives and at healthier as well, but now being a teenager, it's hard to monitor everything that he puts in his mouth.

I've spoken with him numerous times about his diet and he agrees that he needs to eat healthier, but doesn't want to give up meat. Neither me or my older (19 year old) daughter eat meat, but we still don't eat as healthy as we used to. My son has agreed to try to do better with his diet while outside of the home, but what can I do to slowly ween him off of his medication. He currently takes 70 mg of Concerta per day and it does help him focus in school. I'm afraid if I don't do this correctly, he'll flunk out of school. He's barely staying above water as it is and I don't want to make the wrong move, but need to do something to help him.

I've also explained to him that he doesn't want to live his life this way on medications and we need to work on an alternative now and he agrees, but I'm afraid of the changes failing and thus him failing in school.

I’ve been listening to the Health Shows for 5 years and I must admit that although they are one of my favorite shows, I don’t always agree with everything that the experts have advised. I am no doctor or a nutritionist but I do read a lot and have tried my best to educate myself on nutrition. I’ve tried various food plans and some worked and some didn’t work. As a matter of fact, I’ve tried the vegan diet and I put on more weight because I ate more starches.

I saw Dr. Baruch at one of Mike’s events and he seems like a nice man who really means well. However, I must admit, that to me, some of his advice seems to be a little extreme or to one-size-fits-all especially with diet & food plans. I also was a little baffle on his advice regarding breast cancer and a women’s menstrual cycle.

During the Breast Cancer Show, Dr. Baruch stated that if women didn’t want to get breast cancer that they should start taking their bras off. Can you imagine a woman with size 42 DD bras size walking down the street with no bra on? For women who work in Corporate America and other professional jobs, it would be totally unprofessional & unacceptable to go to a business meeting and to work without a bra. Maybe if you have very small breast it wouldn’t be so noticeable, but even then, it seems unprofessional to go to work like that. I am a breast cancer survivor and when I first got it, I did a lot of research and I found nothing claiming that bras can cause breast cancer. I also asked my Oncologist (Cancer Doctor) and he said to his knowledge, bras do not cause breast cancer. I know that when I was on radiation treatment, they didn’t allow me to wear bras with under wires. I was only allowed to wear sport bras or regular bras with no under wire. Under wire bras are not really good for the breast. They dig in the breast and can cause cyst and irritation. I basically only used no wire bras and sport bras. Bally’s and Warner’s have a nice selection of no wire bras in all sizes and colors. Even sport bras look much nicer then they use to that you can even wear them as regular bras. But to go with no bra at all, I don’t agree with that one. I’m sure Dr. Baruch is a very intelligent man, but it would have been nice to have other experts on like an Oncologist. It’s good to get different opinions so that everyone can choose what’s best for them.

Regarding women’s menstrual cycle, I don’t remember if it was Dr. Baruch or Dr. Sunyatta who said that 6 day periods are to long. Again, to my knowledge a 5 – 6 day period is normal. I asked my GYN doctor and she also said that a 5 – 6 day period is normal. A menstrual cycle is part of being a woman and its design to do different things. It helps to clean her out and to help with child bearing. For women who want to have children, the best time to come out pregnant is immediately after her period. That is when women’s eggs ovulate and the best time to come our pregnant. Again, I’m no doctor, but that is what I’ve been told from my GYN Doctor. There are currently pills on the market claiming that they can reduce your period to 3X per year. What they are not telling you is the dangers of those pills. They can cause severe blood clots. I read of a lady who was taking them and she got a blood clot in her brain and died. Again, I’m no doctor but I wonder if these kinds of pills would have an effect on women coming out pregnant. Why not let your body go through it natural course. Every women body is different.

Regarding food and diet, I’ve heard Dr. Baruch say that a vegan diet is the healthiest, that diary isn’t good for you and that when they milk the cows, that the cow’s urine gets into the milk, that 75% of the foods in the supermarket are not edible and that if you want to eat healthy that you should spend more money (even if you can’t afford it) and buy from the Health Food Stores. I respect Dr. Baruch opinion, but it seems a little extreme and to one-size-fits-all. You can’t overwhelm and scare people into changing their diet. When they feel overwhelm, they may not want to stick with it.

As far as vegan diets being the healthiest diet, a couple of years ago I stop eating meat and I put on more weight and my stomach got bigger. The reason why is because I started to eat more starches. Normally, when people give up meat, they tend to eat more starches which are actually worst for you. When starches break down in your body, they turn to sugar, especially white starches, and this causes your blood sugar level to shoot up and it causes food cravings. When your blood sugar level is up, this can cause you to feel hungrier and this can also cause diabetes. People think that table sugar alone causes diabetes, however, starches actually has more sugar.

This lady at my old job was a vegan and she ate Chinese Vegetable Fried Rice every day for lunch. I don’t care if she didn’t have meat, Chinese Fried Rice is not healthy. I’ve also been to about three Vegan restaurants and everything on there menus wasn’t healthy. They had macaroni and cheese, potato salad, fried egg plant parmesan, vegetable lasagna, fried cheese sticks and fried vegetables. None of these foods are healthy foods. Fried food isn’t healthy, I don’t care if is fried veggies, cheese, chicken, or fish. Even if macaroni & cheese is made with soy cheese, it is still made with macaroni which is all starches. If you are going to eat pasta, the best kind of pasta is the whole grain or whole wheat pasta. They are brown pastas and have fiber and the fiber helps break down and not convert so much into sugar.

Like I said above, when I gave up meat, my stomach got bigger and that’s because your body needs proteins. Proteins help to build muscle and it helps you to feel more satisfy and full because it doesn’t bring up your sugar and insulin level. I don’t believe that all protein is bad for you. If you take off the skin and cut off the fats and either bake, grill, or broil it, it actually healthier then eating friend cheese sticks (even if its soy cheese). Fish is another good source of proteins. Fish like Salmon, Sardines, albacore Tuna has Omega 3 fatty acids which are good for you and good for Arthritis because it helps with inflammation. Fish is also a brain food and it helps to make your smarter and improve memory.

Like I said above, your body needs protein to help build muscle and what a lot of people don’t know is that vegetarians are more susceptible to pernicious anemia because of lack of Vitamin B12 food mainly in animal proteins. Also, high levels of Folic Acid contain in Vegan diets can mask the B12 deficiency. I know that there are other sources of meatless protein like Soy products; however, not everyone can eat Soy. I personally eat some Soy products and I don’t have a problem with them but some people can’t eat soy. Soy products are made out of beans and can full you up with gas. Everyone stomach may not be able to handle soy. This is what I mean that diets can’t be one-size-fit-all. Also, Soy products have hormones in it call phytoestrogen isoflavones and may not be good for very young women (it can throw off their hormone levels) and some men. That is why some doctors tell women who are going through menopause to take soy tablets to help with their hot flashes, since the soy has hormones.

I am not saying that soy and beans are bad for you, all I am saying is that it may not be good for everyone. As a matter of fact, beans are a good source of protein, however, they can upset your stomach and cause severe gas so for people with gas or stomach problems, beans may not be good for them. Nuts are also another good source of proteins, but eaten in large quantities, they can be very fattening because they are high in calories. Almonds and walnuts are very healthy.

When choosing a diet different factors need to be taken into consideration, for example, age, gender, and personal health issues a person may have. Not all foods are good for everyone. Even so-call healthy foods like juicing may not be good for everyone, for example diabetics. Juicing vegetables may be good for a diabetic, but I don’t think that juicing fruits will be good for them. Even though fruits are healthy for you, they do have a lot of sugar in them. They are a natural source of sugar, but when they brake down in your body, they brake down the same as any other sugar. Diabetics can have some fruits, but with juicing, more fruits are required to get one glass of juice. For instance orange juice, if you have one piece of orange, it only has 62 calories, however, you normally need 5 oranges to make one glass of orange juice. If you take 62 calories and times that by 5, you get (62 x 5) = 310 calories. That is a lot of sugar and calories in one glass of orange juice. Most people have about 310 – 500 calories per meal. If you are not a diabetic then there is noting wrong with juicing, since orange juice is a good source of vitamin C. This is what I mean that a food plan can’t be one-size-fits-all. It depends on the person.

God gave us the command after the flood to eat the meat from the animals. They were suppose to be properly feed and taken care of and not abuse. When they were slaughtered, they were supposed to be slaughtered in such a way that it wasn’t barbaric. God gave the Israelites various laws and commandments in the book of Leviticus on how to properly care for the animals. I understand that in today’s time, some of the slaughter houses are abusing the animals, but that is something that the Food & Drug Administration should be looking into resolving. Not all of them are doing that. If a person chooses not to eat meat or fish because they don’t want to kill the animals and have love and appreciate for them, then I can respect their decision. However, what I don’t agree with is when Vegan say that they don’t eat meat because it’s healthier diet.

I also find nothing wrong with dairy products as long as you get fat free or 1%. They have made a lot of improvement with daily products. They have organic if you choose to have organic and they have lactose free daily. I personally get regular fat free milk from Pathmark and soy milk because it helps me with my hot flashes. I get the Farmland brand skim milk and it says right on it that it has “no hormones added” and no antibiotics. Regular milk is a good source of calcium and vitamin A & D. The milk is pasteurized and homogenized so that humans can consume it. Dr. Baruch said that cow’s milk is supposed to be for baby cows. There are animals and fish that eat other animals and fish who are not of the same type of animal. If cow’s milk should only be for cows then women breast milk should be for all humans. Can you imagine a big grown man drinking a glass of women’s breast milk? Women are only able to produce breast milk after pregnancy. The cows are always able to produce milk.

Dr. Baruch said that when the farmers milk the cows that the cow’s urine gets into the milk. They haven’t milk cows from a bucket in years. In today time, machines are use to milk the cows. The machine is attached to the cow’s breast and it goes into a tube then into a bucket that is no where near the cow. This seems to be a way of disgusting people into following a vegan diet only. Also, I can’t imagine the Food & Drug Administration allowing something like that to happen.

Women more then men need calcium in there diet because as they get older, their bones get weak and they can get Osteoporosis. This is what I mean that different factors need to be taken into consideration when choosing a food plan. I understand that there are other sources of calcium like soy, almond, & rice milk. I drink soy milk but, like I said above, it has hormones and it not good for everyone. Almond milk comes from almonds which is not only a good source of calcium and a good source of proteins. However, almond milk has a lot of sugar especially the different flavored ones and this can be a down side. If you prefer to drink almond milk, buy the regular flavored ones. They have less sugar. When I do buy almond milk, I normally buy the regular one. I personally don’t think that rice milk is healthy. It is made from rice and rice is all starches so I’m sure that rice milk would have a lot of starches. Also, it depends what you are using the milk for. For example, I wouldn’t use soy milk to bake a cake.

As far as 75% of the food in the Supermarkets not being healthy, neither is some of the food in some of these so call health food stores. Some of them have become so commercialize and are charging more money for some of the same things that they have in the regular Supermarket. The Whole Foods Supermarket on 14th Street in New York City even sales rib diners. When you walk in, the first thing you see is a huge bakery and cake section. Cakes, pastry, & sweets are not healthy. To me Whole Foods is just a high scale supermarket. Mike has a diverse group of listeners not everyone can afford to shop at the health food stores. Let’s get real; they don’t have a Whole Foods in the Hood. I think you can still make some healthy choices at the regular supermarket (i.e., whole grain foods like oatmeal, bran cereal, whole wheat breads, fresh bean & lentils, fresh fruits, veggies, low fat dairy, fish, poultry, etc.). Why do people think that good quality always has to mean very expensive. That is not always true. I understand that we are worth it and should want to spend what we can to eat healthy. However, not everyone can afford to buy very expensive foods. You can only spend what you have. Dr. Baruch said that people need to stop spending money on fancy cars. Some people buy cars because they may need it for transportation to get to work. Not everyone is buying fancy cars. Some people are really struggling. One time this lady called Mike’s show and said that she had a Master’s Degree and couldn’t work because she became disabling. She said that she was collecting food stamps and they had reduced her stamps from $800 to $400 per month. You think that this lady can afford to buy at Whole Foods, if Whole Foods even takes food stamps, I doubt it. How about poor working single mothers who don’t have a large income and are receiving WIC (food assistance for poor mothers). I am sure they don’t take WIC at the health food stores either. Also elderly people with fix incomes are also struggling. However, I think that even poor people can still make good food choices at the supermarket. Dr. Baruch’s advice is that you become a Vegan or shop only at the health food store. You can’t overwhelm people into changing their diets. They can start gradually and continue to change has they go along. I read Dr. Ian Smith’s (from Celebrity Fit Club) diet book “The Fat Smash Diet” and his food plan has healthy food chooses that include meat, fish, veggies, fruits, daily, salads, etc. A lot of people have lost weight on his diet and have gotten healthier. I’m not trying to offend anyone or put anyone down or say that one diet is better then the other, all I am saying is to people need different chooses. It's good to see that there a more a variety of experts on the show now. People should educate themselve. I think that people are just saying that they are Vegen or that they buy organic and don't even really know what it means.
