I work with children that live in the projects of Watts, Ca. in a home-based ministry called "Open Door Ministries of Watts." I have been working with youth in Watts since 2001. I take them out of their hostel environment and expose them to a Christian atmosphere by taking them to church on Sundays, participate them in fun Christian activities such as Christian rollerskating on Fridays, and formed a youth choir called "Children of Watts Gospel Choir" which we had the honor of singing at the House of Blues.

My mentoring ministry started with 16 youth. Out of the 16 youth, who are now graduating from High School (and still live in the projects), none of them are in gangs, using nor selling drugs. Hallelujah!

I am the volunteer coordinator for the Foster Care Project. Our organization provides volunteers to work with foster and probation youth primarily in the Pasadena area and we have just successfully created and implemented a faith based mentoring program of our own. Our agency’s largest component is providing mentors to the youth. We have partnered with 17 agencies in the Pasadena. L.A., and San Fernando Valley areas to whom we provide volunteers. We also serve as an influential component in the policy and advocacy arena developing policy and legislature related to foster youth needs.
As a mentor myself my belief is that no child should ever say they didn't have someone positive in their life.

The number one problem facing our homes, schools and communities is…Disruptive Behavior. With so many opportunities and advances in technology, the youth of today are exposed to more negative connotations than positive ones. After years of research and testing, we have developed a program to encourage children to make the right choices regardless of their environment.

The Ticket Program (1) identifies all problem areas, (2) organizes positive motivators and negative consequences and (3) creates a support team of concerned individuals for the child. Using this information, a consistent and structured behavior plan is developed. The child and parent or school receives instructions and training. Every action of the child is thoroughly documented and recorded using our unique numbering system. The support team is alerted via email and/or text message when any action (positive or negative) is recorded. At the preset interval (daily, weekly or monthly), all actions are reviewed. If majority of the actions are positive, the child is awarded a positive motivator. If majority of the actions are negative, a consequence/punishment is administrated. After the award or punishment, the documenting cycle is reset. The entire process allows a positive behaving child to be recognized for making the right choices and gives the negative behaving child a fair chance to redeem him or herself. Positive behaving children are no longer punished along with the negative behaving children. All rewards and consequences are recorded via the program to prevent duplicate rewarding or punishments. The Ticket Program provides a safe, nurturing and learning environment at home and/or school.

In addition to the Home, Classroom and School version, The Ticket Program offers a Mentor (relatives, friends and community members of the child) and Monitor (Home, Behavior and Clinical/Medical Specialist) version. The Ticket Program gives a much-needed view into the child’s environment. This permits support and aid to be given to areas where needed and recognition for superior performance where appropriate. Children control their own behavior without any guidance other than the initial setup discussion. Homes become a place of love and understanding. Schools become a place of learning (higher test scores). Communities become stronger as a result of more future law-abiding citizens.

Who: FAMLI, Inc., founded in 1992, is a 501 (c) (3) non-profit agency, committed to the education and holistic health and development of at risk youth and young adults. FAMLI presents dynamic and effective projects for youth including mentoring programs, various after-school activities, Saturday programs.

What: A fund-raising event, "Mentoring, To Save A Generation". A day of education, mentoring, food, music, theatrical presentations, interactive discussion, an awards presentation, poetry and spoken word, and film festival.

Our objective here is to begin a process of healing by talking about these issues, and investigating potential solutions in an effort again, help our children realize their innate potential and life goals.

About the Program

In 1990, we created a special program to encourage youngsters to excel in scienceand math…Drew Saturday Science Academy.

By exposing students to science and research subjects and topics at early ages, Drew has shown that students interests in math and science are stimulated and heightened as they grow and move up in grade levels. At the high school level, promising students are further challenged to delve deeper into the sciences, and they are encouraged to pursue educational and career goals in the biomedical science and health-related fields. A select group of students is enrolled in a special curriculum emphasizing scientific inquiry, critical thinking, and effective communications. These students are assigned a research project prior to graduation from high school.

The Drew pipeline also exposes students to ongoing research and includes both institutional and federally funded programs from the National Library of Medicine (K-12) and the National Institute of Diabetes, Digestive and Kidney Diseases (high school and undergraduate students).

Our learning program does a more than nurture a child’s interest in science and math. Itprovides kids in our community with an open door to the wonders of the world around them through an exploration of complex subjects and academic exercises tailored to their age.
