ARTICLE: JENA MAYOR CALLS SONG INFLAMMATORY:

A video in which rapper-actor Mos Def asked students around the country to walk out Oct. 1 to support the "Jena Six" escaped comment by this town's mayor. But when John Mellencamp sang, "Jena, take your nooses down," he took issue.

"The town of Jena has for months been mischaracterized in the media and portrayed as the epicenter of hatred, racism and a place where justice is denied," Jena Mayor Murphy R. McMillin wrote in a statement on town letterhead faxed on Friday to The Associated Press.

He said he had previously stayed quiet, hoping that the town's courtesy to people who have visited over the past year would speak for itself. "However, the Mellencamp video is so inflammatory, so defamatory, that a line has been crossed and enough is enough."

Mellencamp could not comment immediately because he was on a plane from California to Indiana and had not heard about McMillin's comments, publicist Bob Merlis said late Friday.

A brief note from Mellencamp posted Thursday on his Web site says he is telling a story, not reporting. "The song is not written as an indictment of the people of Jena but, rather, as a condemnation of racism," it says.

Nooses hung briefly from a big oak tree outside Jena High School a year ago, after a black freshman asked whether black students could sit under it. A white student was beaten unconscious three months later, in December.

Six black students, four of them 17 years old and legally adults, were arrested. Five were initially charged with attempted murder, although that charge has been reduced to aggravated second-degree battery as four of the older youths have been arraigned. The only youth tried so far was convicted, but that conviction was overturned on appeal and the case was sent to juvenile court.

Mellencamp's song opens, "An all-white jury hides the executioner's face; See how we are, me and you?" As he sings, images of Jena, the high school and the tree are followed by video from the 1960s, including civil rights marchers, police beatings, and President John F. Kennedy and the Rev. Martin Luther King speaking. Still images include one of a protest sign reading, "God demands segregation," a stylized drawing of people in Ku Klux Klan robes and an older image of a black man in shackles, begging.

"I do not want to diminish the impression that the hanging of the nooses has had on good people," McMillin wrote. "I do recognized that what happened is insulting and hurtful."

But, he said, "To put the incident in Jena in the same league as those who were murdered in the 1960s cheapens their sacrifice and insults their memory."

At McMillin's request, the Jena Town Council voted unanimously on Tuesday to create an interracial committee to study racial relations and suggest solutions to any problems.

I have the utmost respect for Mellencamp. This isn't the first time that he has wriiten or sang about injustice. Besides, his music is good!

I have the utmost respect for Mellencamp. This isn't the first time that he has wriiten or sang about injustice. Besides, his music is good!

I agree with you 100%. John Mellencamp has done this several times for causes, even at the risk of hurting his career. One thing I can say about him, Bono, Sting and others in our white entertainment family is that they have no fear for their careers when they take up certain causes. But, where is the hip hop community on the Jena situation. The Self-Destruction movement happened out those artists not caring about beefs or record sales, whereas today's "rappers" are. If it takes John Mellencamp to bring this out, God bless him, because as he says in that Chevy commercial, "this is our country".

I used to enjoy his music when he was just John Cougar. I respect this man to the utmost for making this beautiful song and the video is POWERFUL! I also enjoy Bruce Springsteen's music too. He did a song about the Diallo shooting in 1999 called 41 Shots. NYC remembers that one.

Apparently, Jena mayor Murphy McMillin feels that Mr. Mellencamp is the more serious problem. More than two weeks after telling Mississippi white nationalist Richard Barrett how much he appreciates having people in town during the September 20th rally "opposing the colored folks," McMillin has made no attempt to apologize or otherwise back away from his remarks.

I've been trying very hard to give the mayor of Jena and the district attorney of LaSalle Parish the benefit of the doubt, but every time one of them steps in front of a microphone, they make that task more difficult. Both of them have inflammatory remarks of their own to apologize for. John Mellencamp should be the least of their worries.

It is troubling that with all the facts & evidence that has come out in the situation here in Jena. People still can't get the story staight. Mellencamp is a sham. I have never liked his music. He like Sharpton can't get it right even if you hand it to them on a silver platter. Sharpton is a scam artist, By that I mean cases such asTawana Brawley, Crown Heights. Even tax evasion & fraud.

This post just made my point about what is ever wrote about Jena always has half truths & lies. McMillin never said that it was good to have people in Jena to" oppose the colored folk". Therefore no apology neccessary. As far apologies go It would be nice if CNN, Friends Of Justice, Micheal Baisden & various other people such as Sharpton & Jackson apologized to the town of Jena for all of the derogatory & racist remarks they have made.Mellencamp should apologize to the town of Jena for such an hate filled & contradictory video. 9 out of 10 people in this generation don't even know what MLK jr. even stood for. Sharpton & Jackson are only trying to exploit his name for their own benefit" personal gain" such as more money in their pocket.
