There were also persons referred to as White slaves, such as my great grandfather Sam Faison, who was born a slave in North Carolina around 1855. After years of extensive family research, I had not yet discovered the fact that Sam or members of his family were White, but I did manage to uncover a considerable amount of historical information about him, his wife, his parents and fourteen of his siblings, including the location of the plantation on which he and his family had been enslaved as well as the name of their former owner (Dr. Henry W. Faison of Faison, North Carolina) and a possible Bill of Sale for Sam’s father. I was even fortunate enough to come across a collection of oil paintings depicting many of the former slaves of the Faison's who—like my great-great grandparents—never left their plantation even after Emancipation. When it came to discovering my great grandfather Sam Faison on the census, however, things were much different. Though he was born a slave, according to the federal census he was also White."

This is very interesting, but the history of this counrty is so complex, and there is so much to be told. In my family, I found that my great, great , great grandfather was from Ireland, and his son also came from Maryland, and was enslaved in Georgia. I don't know if he was free prior to that. I would not have described myself as a sista with aids unless I was completely comfortable with myself. I've been living with HIV for 25 years. When I was 13 I was raped of my virginity and infected. A chain reaction began that was fueled by the rape, my own family history and my personal struggles for identity and understanding. My novel Coincidence, has been reviewed by various book clubs (SWEEP Readers, The 750 book club, etc..) and received rave reviews for the believable characters, crazy plot twists and incredible pacing.

Coincidence is an urban suspense novel about Rae Macon, a savvy plus-sized attorney who works at her parents law firm in Washington, DC. Everything in Rae's life is predictable and safe. She has everything a single woman could want but longs for love. Unfortunately, secrets in her parents past began to tear her world to shreds as she falls for the sexy Grier Carver. Grier's own past creeps up in the form of lady Lucifer herself, Millicent Bordine. If only Millicent knew how to duck she might be able to cash some of the checks that her arrogant mouth writes for her. The Journal keeper writes about the abuse that she receives from her tyrant of a spouse, but the reader doesn't know which of the characters within the novel this person is. I leave them clues throughout her writings and even hints within the story. My readers couldn't wait to tell me who they thought she was and guessed wrong so many times while reading it, that most finished in a day or two just to tell me how wrong and off the mark they were.


Rae fights to keep a company from being devoured by the IRS but Rae becomes suspicious when the numbers don't add up and she witnesses the CEO snorting cocaine in his office. Some one is killing DC's elite and now they are trying to kill Grier and Rae, as well as, their mothers. The Journal Keeper must decide how to escape her private hell. Will she choose to die by her own means or let her spouse finally keep his promise to kill her? The reader will feel like they have to finish if for no other reason than to save her from a tragic destiny.


Coincidence sizzles with more secrets than a church picnic. Rae discovers a diary that links her family to murder, drug trafficking, and embezzlement; Grier learns secrets surrounding his family that will find him with a pistol pointed at his chest; Millicent refuses to let Grier Carver slip through her manipulating little fingers but she has to get passed Rae's powerful punches and stop getting knocked on her behind long enough to convince Grier to forgive sins of the past.

HOMELESS MAN STARTS MAGAZINE

Bobby R. Bowden, of Charlotte, NC, lived in his car for months while attending grad school and working on his publishing dream. He defied his unfortunate circumstances by devoting his time to creating a FREE magazine in “physical” as well as “digital” form. Klazzy.com the Magazine is a lifestyle publication geared towards “Distinguished Professionals”. The magazine is well rounded by delivering information on business, health, life, & leisure. In addition, Bowden’s sharp wit and radical perspectives keep readers entertained as well as informed.

Bowden states that the main reason for starting the magazine and website, in which he creates, designs and edits himself, is to raise money for his UK2K (U knead 2 know) Scholarship Fund, a fund to help African American Males receive their undergraduate and Masters Degrees in the business, computer, marketing, and accounting fields.

“We need more of our black men to start their lives debt free and with advanced degrees, which in turn bring advanced jobs. Our program will not stop at a four year degree”, states Bowden, “We will carry our scholarship recipients all the way through a masters program for those who do not land positions that offer 100% tuition reimbursement. Our program will also offer family, relationship, financial, and corporate counseling along with mandatory internships as a sophomore, and volunteer services throughout the program. I feel that if we can help to uplift the black men directly, we can support and promote family unity and cut down on single parent minority homes. If I help one black boy become a responsible black man, I will feel like I accomplished something” Bowden hopes to be able to offer his first scholarship for the fall of 2008.

In reference to starting the magazine while homeless, Bowden states, “I just could not work a 9-5 and effectively run a successful magazine at the same time. I knew that as long as I continued to keep the website up and continue to produce online magazines, I wouldn’t have to sleep in my car much longer. I had a plan, and I was able to get things going, but what about those people who do not have a plan. And I’m not just speaking of the people who are homeless now, I’m talking about the kids in high-school and even college who do not have a plan. I had my degree and still ended up homeless. I was getting my MBA, and was still sleeping in my car. I want to do my part to keep others from getting to that point. I feel that I have so much to do to help other people.” When asked why did he start an online versus a traditional magazine first, Bowden laughs deeply and states, “Even though it takes just as much time as a printed magazine (i.e, website, design, layout, and editorial), with me being broke, online is all I could afford!”

After about ten minutes of scanning the cram-packed room, Jade spotted Sheila. She motioned for her to come there.

“What’s up, girl?” Sheila asked half out of breath.

“Are you ready yet? I agreed to stay here one hour. We have been here two hours longer than planned. A pimp and a midget have hit me on. I’ve been pushed, pulled, and damn near knocked down.”

“OK, OK, let me just find that little cutie I was dancing with and give him my number.”

“Girl, come on here.” Jade pulled her by the arm. “You are old enough to be his mother.”

They fought their way through the club and out the door. The smell of cigarette smoke, alcohol and body odor nearly singed Jade’s nose hairs. Finally, fresh air, she thought. She took a few deep breaths.



The traffic outside the club was bumper to bumper with people trying to find a parking space.

“It is going on one o’clock and people are still trying to get in here,” Sheila commented. “This really is the new hot spot,” quoting what she had heard the local DJ say on the radio.

“Well, I will happily give up my space and with pleasure.”

Jade tried to maneuver out of the tight spot she had parked in. She shifted to reverse, to drive and back to reverse again. She was finally able to pull safely out of the space, but backed into the path of an oncoming vehicle.

Beeeeeeeep…The driver laid on the horn. Jade threw up her hand in a gesture to say I’m sorry but she was temporarily paralyzed by what she saw. It was Xavier, with a woman in the passenger’s seat. The headlights reflecting off of her vehicle illuminated the inside of Xavier’s. Even without a clear view of his face, Jade would have known it was Xavier’s SUV because of the NCCU plate in the front.

Jade felt sick to her stomach. She could not believe what she was seeing.

“Isn’t that?” Sheila paused after catching a glimpse of the woman in the passenger’s seat.

Jade showed little emotion; she just put her car in drive and sped off.



Xavier slammed on his brakes and blew the horn. He switched on his high beams. He knew instantly it was Jade in the car in front of him.

“Jade.”

Xavier wasn’t sure what action to take so he sat gripping the steering wheel and staring into her vehicle. He watched Jade staring back at him. He reached for the door handle to get out and explain everything to her. He knew how this must have looked but he knew once he explained it to her she would understand everything.

Xavier only got as far as to touching the handle before Jade was gone.

Suddenly, being Tia’s “nurturing confidant” with hot young models around, plus two women who want his body begins to spell t-r-o-u-b-l-e. Aaron’s depiction of Tia as the dream woman–turned–nightmare devouring diva is over-the-top, but that’s Aaron’s style, and the book’s a hoot. (Nov.)

Not many people who listen to the Michael Baisden Show are starting their own TV network, but we are!

It's called Indie Dish. It will be a forum for independent artists of all types, (music, films, tv) and also screenwriters, producers, directors, animators etc. to showcase their various talents and increase their exposure. We're taking the concept of an MTV, BET, VH1, HBO, etc, and bringing it to the local level, and it is all black owned and operated. We are presently seeking high quality video content from all independent artists. If they do not have it and want it, we can produce it for them!

We are also giving small local advertisers a chance to be on TV that may have been out of their reach in the past, while simultaneously reaching an audience that they may not have been able to reach before.

We'll be debuting in the Atlanta area, on Comcast channel 150 in early October (set for this Saturday, October 6, 8pm) where we will be available to approximately 500,000 Comcast subscribers in the metro Atlanta area, with plans to expand to every major market in the country, and eventually offering a package of several original channels.
