The Student Government Association of Albany State University (Albany, GA.) hosted an on campus rally to support the Jena 6. Through discussion by students, faculty, and staff, knowledge about this unfortunate situation has spread through our city like fire! The SGA, in conjunction with the student body and other student organizations have made it so that we can bring at least two bus loads of ASU students to join in making this monumental statement. We are overjoyed to be able to lend our support by becoming apart of this movement for not long ago, our city went through a similar situation with our very own Albany Movement. We look forward to joining the nation as we march together to make a stand against unequal justice!

NSU comes together at the Jena 6 Rally
By Nicole McGloster 9-5-07
“Justice falls into two categories—there is a justice for people who have money and there is a justice for people without money…”-Senator Yvonne B. Miller
About 50 of Norfolk State University’s staff, faculty, and students came together to inform, campaign, and raise money for the Jena six controversy on Tuesday evening outside of the Mills E. Godwin Student Union Building.
In September 2006, the racial tensions within the small town of Jena, La. erupted. Three nooses were hung from a tree after a black student sat under the “white tree” on his high school campus. Followed by subsequent fights and even an arson incident, the situation escalated when six black students were charged with attempted second-degree murder after they attacked a white student. The white student suffered from a few bruises and cuts, but on the very same day he was released from the hospital and attended a school function that night. Before that particular incident occurred, a group of white students attacked a black student at a party and they were only suspended from school. The black students are now awaiting trial where they could possibly be sentenced to 25 years to 100 years in prison.
Starting off with a brief overview of the racial injustice that is currently taking place in Jena, La., Student Government Association president Keisha Kirkland’s booming voice led the rally. With encouraging words, she not only had the audience shocked by the information that sparked the Jena 6 issue, but also left them wanting to be proactive. She put emphasis on the fact that NSU students “do not condone the violence that took place”, but it’s the Jena high School students’ right to a fair trial.
“This is an issue that affects humanity,” said Senator Yvonne B. Miller, who spoke at the rally. “Justice should not be mislaid or misplaced.”
And the voice that sent chills through the audience was that of Garyn Clark who sang an uplifting gospel selection, as well as the poetic voice of Ahmad Durant-Bey. His poem described how one can and strive to make a change despite his or her current situation. Closing off with a prayer was Reverend Dr. Kirk T. Houston, Sr. of Gethsemane Community Fellowship Baptist Church.
The student union block was filled with other concerned students who want something done about this injustice.
Cecily Roach, an NSU sophomore, relies on her faith to make a change.
“I plan on keeping them in my prayers.”
Arianna Shortridge, a freshman at NSU, wishes that a trip to Jena could be funded.
“A march or a rally could take place outside of the governor’s house or the courthouse,” Shortridge said.
Clinton Quick, an NSU senior, questions how America can be the most powerful nation in the world with situations like this still going on.
“Petitions and rallies are just a small way to help but I believe that I can make a difference by informing others on what’s going on.”
About 40 students signed up for the Jena 6 committee after the rally, and a donations basket for the Jena students was passed around.
“Don’t think this rally was a waste of time…we’re not going to ignore this,” said Kirkland. “Jena six. Google it, research it, always find out what’s going on in our black communities.”
Donations for the families of the Jena 6 are being taken by Valerie Holmes in Student Support Services on the third floor of the Student Union Building.

Hello Mr. Baisden, my name is Mark Norris and I am a student in my junior year at Cal State LA in the school of Social Work. I applaud the motivation and passion you are brilliantly displaying in this whole Jena 6 mess. My prayers, heart and mind go out to all of us who are deeply moved by this injustice. I am doing what I can in my community to make sure we stage protest while our brothers and sisters are in Louisiana doing their thing. Which the whole world should be in my opinion.
The reason that I am writing is, (and I got to say it's heavy on my heart and I had to voice it) that while I love and have deep, deep appreciation for the way the black community is stepping up, and I know that a lot of that has to do with you and your media forum, I am a bit dishearten that non of this interest or passion comes across when another part of our community is affected. I am talking about black, gay and lesbians who are victims of gay bashing. There are countless lives that have been lost and if it weren't for the few black gay and lesbian news blogs I wouldn't know about it either. I debated emailing you about this and decided to, because like you have said on your radio show, "if we don't stand up for ourselves, nobody will". I truly believe in my heart that if we had more of our heterosexual sisters and brothers with us whenever we protest the injustice when it happens we could accomplish so much more, so very much more. It really hurts my heart when I hear about such bashings and listen to the number of self-righteous black folks who say that it isn't there problem. Well, yes it is all of our problem. A hard boundary for them to cross is the whole Civil Rights issue and whether or not the struggle of the LGBT community compares to the Civil Rights struggle back in the days. Well, I certainly see some similarities that I won't get into, because I think this letter is long enough. All I will say is that there were Gays and Lesbians during the Civil Rights Movement involved and as a matter of fact a Gay Man help Martin with the March On Washington. Bayard Rustin was the principle organizer of the march. So, I am asking, no begging you to please have this same passion, motivation in getting the community encouraged and riled up when one of our own who may just happen to be gay or lesbian, bisexual or transgender has injustice done to them.
Thanks for your time and your love for the community.
Mark Norris

I must say that I am proud to be part of the Jena 6 movement toward justice for these young African American men. It is also showing how when the time comes we as a people can come together as one.
I am a student at Southern University in Baton Rouge, LA. The student body has dubbed this week as Jena 6 week. There are activities all week long showing protest against this un-justice.
The conclusion to this week is a march Thursday from the dorms to the student union. A vigil was held on Tuesday where students sat and observed under a moment of silence and lit six candles each representing one the teens charged in the beating of the white student.
There is also a bus leaving Baton Rouge to Jena for more information on the bus you can contact Toussaint Pierre at 225.771.2300.
Thanks and Shouts out to Southern University for their involvement.

I would like for you to put Oklahoma and the "Divine 9" on blast. I am a life member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity Inc as well as a student at the University of Oklahoma. and I have problems recruiting people to do ANYTHING regarding the Jena 6 out of this state, I guess we forgot about the Tulsa Race Riots. I have been trying to get people in on this to help support by calling congress and the like, voting, or coming to Jena on the 20th. I have worn facebook, myspace and email capabilities totally out. I really need assistance at all possible. If you are able to do this they can contact the headquarters for this movement at Mahogany Concepts in Crossroads Mall in Oklahoma City at 405-636-4197.

There is a student wide forum on the campus of Johnson C. Smith University in Charlotte, NC to speak about racial injustice and they are also participating in the wearing of all black on September 20.

On the 20th,we can do more to show unity than just wearing black and going to Jena or just ralling in our towns. We can be also affective by controlling our dollars on that day and maybe even after that. Black dollars have power and we can show it buy not spending one thin dime on that day. Don't go to the supermarkets, malls, clothing, jewelry stores, McDonalds, Emerils, Red Lobdster,Walmart Target, airlines, hotels and so forth. Make a real difference. Remember the bus boycott. That really made a difference. Sacrifice your time to refrain from spending. Yes go to work but bring your own lunch. Don't go out to lunch or order in. Don't go to Macys or downtown shops for those new Jordons. Also don't go to the movie theaters and listen to these hip hop or pop radio that really don't care for this cause. It's all about the dollar...economy. Let's join together and really make a difference now. Also spread the Jena 6 info by adverising on your vehicle. That is free advertisement...use it!

I'm a white teacher at a black college. My students usually keep abreast of current events and give lots of their time to a variety of good causes. But no one is talking about this up here. I admit a little embarrassed, I just heard about this on the show earlier this week. I am sure my students would be interested in either getting a bus, or at least holding something on campus. How do I, as a white person, bring up the subject without stepping on toes? I know lots of white people listen to the show, but it's a predominantly black audience - so I would like to hear how from any black college students what you think a white person's approach should be bringing attention to the Jena Six issue in the classroom.
If a crotchety old man wanted to bring my attention to something affecting women in academia, it might rub me the wrong way if it wasn't brought up thoughtfully - if he seemed to think he knew what it was like to be a woman, or if it seemed like he didn't think women could stand up for themselves without him - his good intentions could be lost. I want to avoid that kind of insensitivity if I address it before class next week. My students kicked butt after the hurricanes - I know they get involved without a white teacher having to help them. I want that apparent when I bring this up without having to over emphasize the disclaimer that I know they don't need me.

I JUST WANTED TO LET THE LISTENER KNOW THAT THE STUDENTS FROM LINCOLN UNIVERSITY OF PENNSYLVANIA (1ST HBCU) HAD A RALLY TO SUPPORT THE JENA 6 STUDENTS. THEY WILL NOT BE ABLE TO MAKE THE JOURNEY ON THE 20TH. THEY WERE TOLD BY OFFICIALS THAT IT IS JUST TOO FAR FOR THEM TO TRAVEL, BUT THEY WILL BE THERE IN SPIRIT AND WILL BE WEARING THEIR BLACK TO SHOW SOLIDARITY. THEY ARE HOWEVER WILLING TO GO TO WASHINGTON, DC TO MARCH ON WASHINGTON ON SEPTEMBER 20, 2007. IT STARTS WITH ME. I HAVE TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE. STOP WAITING FOR THE NEXT MAN, IT HAS TO START WITH ME.

I'm with you ChildofTheKing. I'm curious about whether Tommy Hilfiger, Donatella Versace, anyone from the House of Gucci, Jacob The Jeweler, the makers of Cristal champagne Prada or any of the big names that ballers and shot callers like to name drop...are they in support of the Jena 6, are they sending their regards?
I could never understand why some of us go broke giving these companies money when they obviously don't care about non whites. Hermes pointed that out to Ms. Oprah Winfrey when they wouldn't permit her to shop in their store.
I wonder if P.Diddy will be bringing any of his well heeled designer connections to give support to the Jena 6 cause?
Another question. While we have this momentum going, what about the Voting Rights Act? Should it have to be renewed? The right to vote as a human should be a given right. We should get this mess straight right now.

A group of students lead by Leah and Arcman have organized a bus to JENA, La and was also successful at getting it funded by the University of Central Florida's Student Governmen Association.
Many members of the UCF community are coming tgether for this cause and it is a privilege to be able to support these boys. Let us all understand the magnitude of this protest and keep our faith high.
This is the beginning of the end................WAKE UP!
