6 arrested in weeklong attack on woman

A woman was sexually abused, beaten and humiliated while being held captive in a home for at least a week, sheriff's officials said Monday after making six arrests.

Those arrested, including a mother and son and a mother and daughter, are white. The victim, a Charleston woman who was being treated at a hospital Monday, is black. The FBI plans to investigate it as a possible hate crime.

"The things that were done to this woman are just indescribable," Logan County sheriff's Sgt. Sonya Porter said.

Deputies found the 23-year-old victim Saturday after going to the home in Big Creek, about 35 miles southwest of Charleston, to investigate an anonymous tip. One of the suspects, Frankie Brewster, was sitting on the front porch and told deputies she was alone, but moments later the victim limped toward the door, her arms outstretched, saying, "Help me," the sheriff's department said in a news release.

Besides being sexually assaulted, the victim had been stabbed four times in the left leg and beaten, Porter said. Both of her eyes were black and blue. The woman's wounds were inflicted at least a week ago, deputies said.

During her capture, the victim was forced to eat rat and dog feces and drink from the toilet, according to the criminal complaint filed in magistrate court. The woman also had been choked with a cable cord and her hair cut, it alleges.

One of those arrested, Karen Burton, is accused of cutting the woman's ankle with a knife. She used the N-word in telling the woman she was victimized because she is black, according to the criminal complaint.

Deputies say the woman was also doused with hot water while being sexually assaulted. The Associated Press generally does not identify suspected victims of sexual assault.

The sheriff's department requested the FBI's participation, said agent Jay Bartholomew.

The six suspects were arrested Saturday and Sunday. Deputies were still trying to determine whether the victim knew her assailants and how she came to be at Brewster's home, Porter said.

Frankie Brewster, 49, is charged with kidnapping, sexual assault, malicious wounding and giving false information during a felony investigation.

Her son, Bobby R. Brewster, 24, is charged with kidnapping, sexual assault, malicious wounding and assault during the commission of a felony.

Burton, 46, of Chapmanville, is charged with malicious wounding, battery and assault during the commission of a felony.

Her daughter Alisha Burton, 23, of Chapmanville, and George A. Messer, 27, of Chapmanville, are charged with assault during the commission of a felony and battery.

Danny J. Combs, 20, of Harts, is charged with sexual assault and malicious wounding.

All six were held Monday in lieu of $100,000 bond each, and all have asked for court-appointed public defenders.

I am at a true loss for words when I read this story today. It's one thing to know that modern day slavery and racisim are still a major part of America today, but its another when something like this happens. Family as a young 23 year black man I was brought up surrounded by positive people in my life. I was taught to get an education and have been blessed to get my masters degree. In my 23 years on this earth I have seen and experienced a lot and try to take my learnings and share them so that the things I have been through can help someone on their path. When I read this story this morning it really got to me and even as I sit here now I have to hold back the tears of hurt and anger. This young lady was told by these disgusting people that she was being treated this was because she was black, and the "n" word was used several time. I was born an raised in NY, and have been living in the south for 2 years now. When I talk about these latest issues going on in the news right now, most of them have the same response, "Welcome to the South". They are not suprised because it has been going on for so long, that it is almost looked at as being the "norm" in alot of peoples eyes. I have family, here that has lived in small southern towns there entire lives who say, these experiences happen everyday. More often than people think. For every one or two incidents that make mews headlines, are are about 100 more that go unheard of. That they live there lives with some sense of fear, because there voices are not heard, because they feel as though they are out numbered. The town I live in, still has klan meetings in the center of town. The old courthouse is considered a historial site, because slaves were auctioned and sold in front of the courthouse to the public. In response to your comment about these issues have been going on for many many years. I agree with you. Though they are sick and evil, the truth is that they have been. I was born an raised in NY, and have been living in the south for 2 years now. When I talk about these latest issues going on in the news right now, most of them have the same response, "Welcome to the South". They are not suprised because it has been going on for so long, that it is almost looked at as being the "norm" in alot of peoples eyes. I have family, here that has lived in small southern towns there entire lives who say, these experiences happen everyday. More often than people think. For every one or two incidents that make mews headlines, are are about 100 more that go unheard of. That they live there lives with some sense of fear, because there voices are not heard, because they feel as though they are out numbered. The town I live in, still has klan meetings in the center of town. The old courthouse is considered a historial site, because slaves were auctioned and sold in front of the courthouse to the public. These things are happening today in 2007. So I totally feel where you are coming from. It just hurt so much to see my people still going through this.

I'm born and raised in the deep south SC but live in the south (not so south) DC METRO. That kind of thing is NOT expected in "the south", to use a hugely general term. Additionally, this kind of inhumane treatment of someone because of skin color happens everywhere. NYC is the most racially segregated place I'd ever seen and Lord knows racism is big there too. Again, people, this thing called racism is institutionalized in this country no matter what you think. This country was built on the backs of black slaves and anywhere colonialism was allowed to thrive, you will find these kind of racist sentiments against dark people. Know the history and culture of the oppressor and you'll see from a global perspective.

BIG CREEK, W.Va. - Six white suspects accused of torturing a young black woman for days in West Virginia will not face federal hate crime charges, Justice Department officials told NBC News on Wednesday.

At one point, an assailant cut the woman’s ankle with a knife and used the N-word in telling her she was victimized because she is black, according to the criminal complaints.

The Justice Department said it will defer to West Virginia in prosecuting the six suspects.

Logan County Prosecutor Brian Abraham said his office would pursue other charges first because they carry stiffer penalties. West Virginia’s hate crime law carries a sentence of up to 10 years.

Also Wednesday, Abraham said the woman, who allegedly was sexually assaulted and forced to eat rat droppings, was not a random target.

One of the six suspects arrested in the case, Bobby Brewster, had a previous relationship with the victim, Abraham said. He said Brewster had been charged in July with domestic battery and assault after a domestic dispute involving the same woman.

“She obviously had some sort of social relationship,” Abraham said. “That is based on the fact that she was present at his residence on a prior date.”

If true, that evidence would undercut the hate crime law, which applies to crimes motivated by racial hatred and not by non-race-related conflicts.

Grisly details
Megan Williams, 20, was found beaten and bruised at Brewster’s mother’s home in rural Big Creek on Saturday.

MSNBC.com generally does not identify suspected victims of sexual assault, but Williams and her mother agreed to release her name. Carmen Williams, Megan William's mother, said she wanted people to know what her daughter had endured.

According to the criminal complaints, Williams’ captors, all of them white, choked her with a cable cord and stabbed her in the leg while calling her a racial slur, poured hot water over her, made her drink from a toilet and made her eat dog feces and rat droppings.

She was also beaten and sexually assaulted during a span of about a week, according to the complaints.

It wasn’t until an anonymous tip led Logan County Sheriff’s deputies to the property on Saturday that her ordeal ended. She limped toward the deputies, her arms outstretched as she cried, “Help me!”

“I didn’t know there were people like that out here,” Carmen Williams said Tuesday from her daughter’s hospital room.

Previous arrest records
Police tape now surrounds the entrances to the beige-and-brown mobile home. An extension cord runs from the home to a cramped shed where authorities believe Megan Williams was held with a portable stereo, a locker and a power saw.

The suspects in the case have previous arrest records going back several years, according to records from Logan County Magistrate Court, and Abraham said he had “some familiarity with all those individuals.”

Since 1991, police have filed 108 criminal charges against the six.

Brewster’s mother, Frankie Brewster, 49, faced the most serious charges among them. She was charged in 1994 with first-degree murder, but pleaded guilty to lesser charges of manslaughter and wanton endangerment. She was released from prison in 2000 after serving five years in the death of 84-year-old Polly T. Ferrell, court records show.

Six in custody
In Williams’ case, Frankie Brewster is charged with kidnapping, sexual assault, malicious wounding and giving false information during a felony investigation.

Bobby Brewster, 24, also of Big Creek, is charged with kidnapping, sexual assault, malicious wounding and assault during the commission of a felony.

Danny J. Combs, 20, of Harts, is charged with sexual assault and malicious wounding.

Karen Burton, 46, of Chapmanville was charged with malicious wounding, battery and assault during the commission of a felony.

Burton’s daughter, Alisha Burton, 23, and George A. Messer, 27, both of Chapmanville, are charged with assault during the commission of a felony and battery. She previously faced charges of assault during the commission of a felony and battery; in May, she was accused of striking Messer with a shovel and smashing the window of a woman’s car. The charges are pending.

All six remained in custody Wednesday in lieu of $100,000 bail each.

Public Defender Dwyane Adkins, appointed to represent Bobby Brewster, declined to comment on the case. The other defendants’ court-appointed lawyers were either in hearings or did not immediately return telephone calls Wednesday.

The home at Big Creek is quiet now. Newborn pups sleep in the entryway to the small shed, their mother protectively barking at approaching strangers.

Good afternoon family. A sad state of affairs for the country right now. It's good to see and hear people talking about the matters, but what are really going to do??? I applaude my brother Michael Baisden for setting it off and getting "mad" and not standing for the b.s. that is plaguing not only black people, but the entire nation and entire world for that matter. Somebody said that the revolution is coming and that it won't be televised. I beg to differ. I say that the revolution is now and it's been televised for years, but people have not been giving notice to it because it "don't affect me directly". Everything that happens in this world affects each and every one of us. No, a particular issue may not reflect you directly today, but guaranteed the results of that issue will surely run down hill, as does all shit.

I've been telling people that I know for years that it's time for a change. It's time for a movement and like Mike has mentioned many times on his show, this is our time, this generation is the one that needs to make the biggest move and not let up. We need to stand up and fight, not with our fists, not with our anger, but with our minds, our love. For years the chips have been stacked against us all. There was a seed planted in our ancestors minds years ago that still affects us till this day. It began on the bank of the James River and continues to affect us as a people today. It's time that we really recognize what is going on around us, accept that there is a problem, define what that problem is and finds ways to plant a new seed in the minds and hearts of this world. It's much bigger than black and white, brown and yellow, man and woman. It's about the ultimate survival of our entire species. For some reason the powers that be don't want there to be peace and equality, they don't want everybody to be free or know the truth of our existence in this realm. It's all about power and control. It won't stop, for them, until there is truly one power who has ultimate control. They are trying to give themselves the power that only one supreme being is supposed to have. They want power so badly that they care not who they destroy in their path, whose civil liberities they are violating, what freedoms we are all entitled to.

It's time that we stand up and get mad. It's time that we band together and use our minds and change the direction of which we are going. We need to do these things before it's too late. One day we're going to wake up in world that we cannot do anything without the government knowing our every move (RFID chips), where we have to live in a certain matter and only talk about what is approved by the powers that be (censorship). But that's only if we allow this to happen. Our original government was made for the people and by the people, it's time that WE the people take that power back......

I'm not sure why we're all so surprised..have we forgotten the founding principles and values of this country? We had a document drafted, signed, and celebrated that talked about the freedom of all, while many of the inhabitants were being hunted and slaughtered or enslaved (Native and African people).

We have to instill the right stuff in our children's hearts, souls and minds and leave all that foolishness alone. I have been angry for a long time now over the unjust treatment of blacks and poor. If you have no control over who you are born as, how can one claim superiority of such a thing? Is it me, or does it seem strange that few cases ever qualify as a hate crime when the victim is black and the assailant is white--keep in mind then gov't George W. Bush opposed a hate crime legislation after the dragging death of James Byrd (1998) by three confirmed white supremacists. The James Byrd Hate Crime Act wasn't passed until 2001 by Bush's successor in the grand state of Texas--kudos to Rick Perry. The rhetoric is spread thick in the discussion of how racism continues to plague this country, but the vast majority of white America remains reluctant to label blatant acts as such--e.g. Jena six, Hurricane Katrina, the media coverage around the Duke Lacrosse incident, and of course our good friend Imus. Such cases are always an isolated incident, and black America is over reacting. I have yet to recall a case perpetrated against black and brown people, and white America in consensus agrees that it was an act of racism--a hate crime. My question is this--why is it that we, the collective we, assume that racism in the heart could be regulated by laws. The laws of the land are subject to the interpretation of the same men that sported hoods as they castrated and murdered young black men in the south. The laws on the books forced a change in behavior, but it did nothing for the heart of these racists. These same racists have since time had families and raised sons and daughters, and what do you think they taught that generation. This country is at a cross road, and we must address and rectify two original sins that this country birthed--racism and sexism, and until that occurs, We(America) will never reach our fullest potential.
The jury is still out on the particulars of this case (West Virginia) as the details slowly make its way to the masses, but our current justice system leaves a great deal to be desired. Lady justice appears not only to be blind, but forgetful, biting and inconsistent, and this is a scary place to be as a person of color having to depend on the system for a resolution. By the way,
it is amazing that the state has reached a decision not to seek a hate crime case in this incident. The state is still gathering the facts, but they have already ruled out a possible sanction for these six.

My friend told me told me about this incident on Tuesday and I was highly upset. I had to search real hard on msnbc.com in order to read about the case. But the new information on the case is what really has me upset. 1) The 6 individuals will not face federal hate crime charges although one of the assailants said she was going through all of this because she is black. What also put me in shock about this family or group of individuals. They have 108 criminal charges against them since 1991. One of the individuals committed murder (pleaded guilty and accepted manslaughter charges) and was released 5 years after being sentenced. Ok Im wondering what is she doing back out on the streets after killing someone. Please dont tell me she was granted freedom based on "GOOD Behavior". Im upset with this and the Jena 6 case, but what must we learn from all of this?? These states need to be liberated. Many of these states still act on social policies that have been in existence since the 1900's. There are particular states that still abide by the Good Ole Boy system. There still are states where blacks are not given the opportunities as other African Americans within the states. There still are individuals that believe that we are inferior to the Caucasians. These two cases should make everyone stand up and fight for whats right. It is no longer a "pro-black issue" its a pro-human issue now.

The other thing I am at odds with is the Oprah thing. Also, when she wanted to open schools in America, she found that the kids didn't have the desire for an education (sad but true). She would go around and ask American kids what they wanted and they would say materialistic things like Playstations, cars, money, etc. That's what the mindset is of today's youth. That is all they are presented with. They think that material and money bring happiness but this is so not true. If we can't get the youth to understand that there is more to life than the next new game or which video is going to be #1 on 106 and Park or TRL, then we are not going to make it. Once we start taking a more active part in the upbringing of these kids, then things will start to change. I'm not talking about censoring what it is that they are seeing or whatever, but we need to be teaching them the difference between right and wrong, good and bad, entertainment and real-life.

Lastly, I see people starting to post comments being critical of what these folks should be charged with. One of the reasons why they are not pursuing the hate crime charge off the bat is because it does not carry stiff enough penalties.

Without turning it into a white and black issue, people are actually split between Hilary and Obama. Nobody really knows who Obama is if you sit and think about it. A woman was sexually abused, beaten and humiliated while being held captive in a home for at least a week, sheriff's officials said Monday after making six arrests.

During her capture, the victim was forced to eat rat and dog feces and drink from the toilet, according to the criminal complaint filed in magistrate court. The woman also had been choked with a cable cord and her hair cut, it alleges.

One of those arrested, Karen Burton, is accused of cutting the woman's ankle with a knife. She used the N-word in telling the woman she was victimized because she is black, according to the criminal complaint.

Deputies say the woman was also doused with hot water while being sexually assaulted. The Associated Press generally does not identify suspected victims of sexual assault.

I am so proud of the cooperative efforts of Misters Baisden & Harvey as well as other celebrities with regards to the Jena 6. It is such a travesty that even in the 21st century, these type of issues remain prevalent in America. As important as the Jena 6 are, there is much work to be done in the U.S. This brutal and sub-human treatment of this young black woman by 6 whites is beyond comprehension. To be forced to eat animal waste and be called the "n" word. And yet, so far, these white individuals have NOT been charged with a hate crime and they are only under a $100,000 bond. Although we should, realistically I understand that we can not make the same type of concerted effort with each and every affront to our people that we are making in the Jena 6 case. I can not provide statistical information due to my point of reference being my experience. I am old enough to remember when there wasn’t any welfare black folk took care of each other. Now, the reaction is the individual is on welfare and drugs they need no assistance. In conclusion, I have fed more children than I care to mention. If you turn the parents in to social services a well intentioned effort to do well for the children we have unwittingly come to embrace family separation by adoption/foster care as the ideal alternative when parents are younger, "unmarried" or experiencing problems. Yet, examples are countless of how some adoptions/foster care turn out suggest that it may be wise to instead consider ways we can help families to meet their challenges and to stay together. Most of the situations listed above have resulted in that four letter word JAIL. If you want the family back GET RID OF THE CRACK.

Just another chapter in the life of a black person living in Amerikkka. While this sad story comes to light. It turns out the sista knows Bobbie Brewster in some way, because she called the police on him for domestic battery a few months earlier. I think when this comes to light its going to turn out to be that Momma Brewster didnt like the black girl dating her son and she took it out on her. This is not an attempt to mailgn the Jenna Six issue, I support Michael Baisden, for all his efforts we need to unite nationally on an issue such as this, however, while advocating for national issues, we must address our own family issues and what we can do within our own parameters.

Children are raised and monitored by play station, Nintendo, and rap music.

Children can identify a crack addict by age five

Children know drug dealers

Children are allowed to watch anything on television from age 1 to include x rated movies.

Children are label conscience by age three

Children are aware of gang affiliates.

Young boys, having their ears pierced before age three

Children are parents starting High School

Children stealing to eat because the received has been applied to the latest fashion or a drug binge.

Young men are creating children they have no intention on supporting.

Drug dealers are in possession of the monthly voucher or card and receive payment promptly with out any regard for the addict or the children

These are examples of actions that I have witnessed from folks in the community as well as, my own siblings. Can we control these actions? Yes, you can certainly try as I have. I found it’s a quagmire of obstacles to deal with these situations. If the community you dwell in is free of these situations RIGHT ON! I can not provide statistical information due to my point of reference being my experience. I am old enough to remember when there wasn’t any welfare black folk took care of each other. Now, the reaction is the individual is on welfare and drugs they need no assistance. In conclusion, I have fed more children than I care to mention. If you turn the parents in to social services a well intentioned effort to do well for the children we have unwittingly come to embrace family separation by adoption/foster care as the ideal alternative when parents are younger, "unmarried" or experiencing problems. Yet, examples are countless of how some adoptions/foster care turn out suggest that it may be wise to instead consider ways we can help families to meet their challenges and to stay together. This reminds me of a debate with the white author of a book about race and crime I once had. I don't remember the title of the book, but I remember the author's last name was "Lynch". Among his many lies was that "75% of all crimes are committed by african americans".

That's when I decided to challenge his statistics on race and crime.

One of the suspects, Frankie Brewster, was sitting on the front porch and told deputies she was alone, but moments later the victim limped toward the door, her arms outstretched, saying, "Help me," the sheriff's department said in a news release.

Besides being sexually assaulted, the victim had been stabbed four times in the left leg and beaten, Porter said. Both of her eyes were black and blue. The woman's wounds were inflicted at least a week ago, deputies said.

During her capture, the victim was forced to eat rat and dog feces and drink from the toilet, according to the criminal complaint filed in magistrate court. The woman also had been choked with a cable cord and her hair cut, it alleges.

One of those arrested, Karen Burton, is accused of cutting the woman's ankle with a knife. She used the N-word in telling the woman she was victimized because she is black, according to the criminal complaint.

Deputies say the woman was also doused with hot water while being sexually assaulted. The Associated Press generally does not identify suspected victims of sexual assault.

The sheriff's department requested the FBI's participation, said agent Jay Bartholomew.

The six suspects were arrested Saturday and Sunday. Deputies were still trying to determine whether the victim knew her assailants and how she came to be at Brewster's home, Porter said.

Frankie Brewster, 49, is charged with kidnapping, sexual assault, malicious wounding and giving false information during a felony investigation.

Her son, Bobby R. Brewster, 24, is charged with kidnapping, sexual assault, malicious wounding and assault during the commission of a felony.

Burton, 46, of Chapmanville, is charged with malicious wounding, battery and assault during the commission of a felony.

Her daughter Alisha Burton, 23, of Chapmanville, and George A. Messer, 27, of Chapmanville, are charged with assault during the commission of a felony and battery.

Danny J. Combs, 20, of Harts, is charged with sexual assault and malicious wounding.

All six were held Monday in lieu of $100,000 bond each, and all have asked for court-appointed public defenders.

Statistically speaking, 80% of crimes are committed by person(s) known to the victim(s). BIG CREEK, W.Va. — State and federal officials decided Wednesday to pursue state charges that carry the stiffest penalties in the brutal kidnapping and weeklong torture of a black woman in Logan County, but the six suspects will not face federal hate crime charges.

While hate crime charges remain an option, U.S. Attorney Charles T. Miller said officials decided to defer to the Logan County Prosecutor Brian Abraham in pursuing state charges that have already been filed.

"We're going to focus on the core aspect of the case that carry more enhanced penalties," Abraham told The Associated Press.

Kidnapping carries a maximum penalty of up to life in prison and sexual assault carries up to 35 years in prison. The maximum penalty for a hate crime is 10 years.

But the proceedings may be delayed by defense attorneys recusing themselves from the case because of conflict of interest concerns.

Four of the six -- Bobby Brewster, George Messer, Alisha Burton and Karen Burton -- are scheduled to appear Monday in Logan County Magistrate Court.

Frankie Brewster and Danny Combs are scheduled for magistrate court appearances on Tuesday.

Logan County Prosecutor Brian Abraham said at least two of the six public defenders representing the defendants have recused themselves, though, which could result in delays.

Lawyers for Bobby Brewster and George Messer have filed motions to recuse themselves, because they represented one or more of the defendants in the past.

The six are charged with assaulting Megan Williams, 20, for more than a week at a ramshackle trailer in Big Creek.

I have studied our history in this country and have developed a great appreciation for what our parents, granparents, and great grand parents have overcome and accomplished. LOGAN, W.Va. - Prosecutors filed amended felony charges Tuesday in the case of a woman tortured for days in rural West Virginia, changes that mean the six defendants could face life in prison if convicted.

Graphic details of the crime were described in court for the first time. Carmen Williams, the woman's mother, left a hearing in Logan County Magistrate Court in tears after listening to the allegations.

Magistrate Jeffrey Lane referred the case against Frankie Brewster, 49, to a grand jury for action. She owns the home where the suspected assault took place. In addition to charges of kidnapping, sexual assault and giving false information to police, the prosecutor filed three counts of misdemeanor battery against Brewster and dropped a charge of unlawful wounding.

All six defendants now face charges of kidnapping, which carries a maximum life sentence. Four of the defendants had faced only lesser charges before Tuesday's filings.

The six, all white, are accused of assaulting Megan Williams, who is black, for more than a week at a ramshackle trailer in Big Creek.

Police say Williams, 20, was tortured, sexually assaulted, forced to eat animal feces and taunted with a racial slur. Her ordeal ended when an anonymous tip led police to the home Sept. 8.

The Associated Press generally does not identify suspected victims of sexual assault, but Williams and her mother agreed to release her name.

Carmen Williams said she wanted people to know what her daughter had endured.

No hate crime charges were filed, though some of Williams' supporters have urged the state to file such counts. Prosecutors have not ruled out such a move but have said they are focused on crimes with the toughest penalties and note that the maximum sentence for a hate crime is just 10 years.

Reading from a statement Williams gave deputies that day, Sheriff's Deputy Jeffrey Robinette said Megan Williams had been stabbed with what she described as a butcher knife and beaten with wooden sticks and fly swatters. He said the woman was sexually assaulted, doused with hot water and taunted with racial slurs.

Williams said in her statement that she was raped at knifepoint by Danny J. Combs in the trailer's bathroom, tied with a cable cord and choked by Karen Burton, doused with hot wax by George A. Messer, and stabbed by Brewster's son, Bobby.

The statement also said the defendants told Williams that they didn't like black people and that they were going to hang her.

"They told me if I tried to get out they was going to hit me and stuff. I was scared of them," Robinette read from Williams' statement.

Williams said two of her captors forced her to drink a cup of their urine, Sheriff's Deputy Rick Goodman testified.

Deputies are still trying to determine how long Williams was held.
In a statement to deputies, Brewster detailed her role and implicated others, saying "I just want to come clean." Brewster also is accused of forcing Williams to perform oral sex on her.

Goodman testified that Brewster told deputies that the six were afraid to let Williams go because she might tell on them. They also talked about killing her.

Combs, 20, now faces a kidnapping charge that carries life in prison. He originally was charged with sexual assault and malicious wounding. Prosecutors added two more sexual assault charges.


Kidnapping and sexual assault charges, along with additional counts of battery, were filed against Burton, 46, her daughter, Alisha; and Messer, 27, all of Chapmanville.

Karen Burton, who was arraigned by video teleconference from jail, said, "Oh, hell no," when informed of the sexual assault charge against her. The other defendants said only "yes, sir" and "no, sir" during their arraignments.

Karen Burton had been charged earlier with malicious wounding, battery and assault during the commission of a felony. Alisha Burton, 23, and Messer were charged earlier with assault during the commission of a felony and battery.

A hearing for Bobby Brewster, 24, was held Monday in Logan County Circuit Court. He is charged with kidnapping, sexual assault, malicious wounding and assault during the commission of a felony. Police have said he had a previous relationship with Williams.

Meanwhile, Williams appeared in a Charleston courtroom Tuesday afternoon to answer outstanding warrants from three counties charging her with crimes involving worthless checks. She was released on $8,000 bond.

Williams, who clutched a small teddy bear in court, was wearing a brace on her right hand and a bandage on her left ankle. She was accompanied by her parents, and her mother held her through portions of the court proceeding. Williams' mother also accompanied her during a brief period in a holding cell.
Hearings on the charges will be held in each county. Williams' father, Matthew, told Magistrate Ward Harshbarger, "She'll be there."

I feel so sorry for our youths today. They need to put down the guns and drugs and pick up a news paper. The youth needs to turn off BET and turn on CNN. The world in the 21st century has not changed in my opinion, as far as racism, they are doing it in a more PC Political Correct way.

You see in the news everything that has nothing to do with these important issues.It's not going to change. It's up to the old heads from the 50's on back to educate our kids on history. 6 arrested in weeklong attack on woman

A woman was sexually abused, beaten and humiliated while being held captive in a home for at least a week, sheriff's officials said Monday after making six arrests.

Those arrested, including a mother and son and a mother and daughter, are white. The victim, a Charleston woman who was being treated at a hospital Monday, is black. The FBI plans to investigate it as a possible hate crime.

"The things that were done to this woman are just indescribable," Logan County sheriff's Sgt. Sonya Porter said.

Deputies found the 23-year-old victim Saturday after going to the home in Big Creek, about 35 miles southwest of Charleston, to investigate an anonymous tip. One of the suspects, Frankie Brewster, was sitting on the front porch and told deputies she was alone, but moments later the victim limped toward the door, her arms outstretched, saying, "Help me," the sheriff's department said in a news release.

Besides being sexually assaulted, the victim had been stabbed four times in the left leg and beaten, Porter said. Both of her eyes were black and blue. The woman's wounds were inflicted at least a week ago, deputies said.

During her capture, the victim was forced to eat rat and dog feces and drink from the toilet, according to the criminal complaint filed in magistrate court. The woman also had been choked with a cable cord and her hair cut, it alleges.

One of those arrested, Karen Burton, is accused of cutting the woman's ankle with a knife. She used the N-word in telling the woman she was victimized because she is black, according to the criminal complaint.

Deputies say the woman was also doused with hot water while being sexually assaulted. The Associated Press generally does not identify suspected victims of sexual assault.

The sheriff's department requested the FBI's participation, said agent Jay Bartholomew.

The six suspects were arrested Saturday and Sunday. Deputies were still trying to determine whether the victim knew her assailants and how she came to be at Brewster's home, Porter said.

Frankie Brewster, 49, is charged with kidnapping, sexual assault, malicious wounding and giving false information during a felony investigation.

Her son, Bobby R. Brewster, 24, is charged with kidnapping, sexual assault, malicious wounding and assault during the commission of a felony.

Burton, 46, of Chapmanville, is charged with malicious wounding, battery and assault during the commission of a felony.

Her daughter Alisha Burton, 23, of Chapmanville, and George A. Messer, 27, of Chapmanville, are charged with assault during the commission of a felony and battery.

Danny J. Combs, 20, of Harts, is charged with sexual assault and malicious wounding.

All six were held Monday in lieu of $100,000 bond each, and all have asked for court-appointed public defenders.

I'm so glad that you see the horrible crime that has been committed here against this poor woman. What can you, myself, and the rest of us do to make this story heard and spread it to the masses of the people so that Ms. Williams and her family can get the justice that they deserve? I will be calling into the radio shows and my local groups to spread the word on this case and rally some people together to do something about this.

I wasn't a violent person and I don't condone violence but enough is enough. I do believe in protecting oneself and not by hiding behind the constitution, politicians or anything else. Arm yourself and protect yourself since the government won't do it.

Yeah, I posted this story yesterday (guess it was moved 'cause I can't find my original post now) and I am still in shock and the sheer EVIL of this situation.

Ok, here's what we can do about all of this hate, racism and discrimination...dry up their money flow!!! That's the only thing that's going to save these people from their feelings of entitlement and superiority. We Blacks need to stop whining and start thinking, planing and fighting. Fight back with the only thing that will get their attention: money (or the lack of our money)!

"This happened in West Virginia, USA very recently and yesterday, Wednesday, 9/12th 2007. Megan Williams was still being treated for this in the hospital.

She was Tortured and Raped for a whole week, by Six White individuals, Three males and Three Females Between the ages of 20 and 49.

CNN normally does not reveal sexual assault victims' names. But Williams, who is hospitalized, and her mother, Carmen Williams, wanted her identity revealed.

Police said Bobby Brewster raped Williams, forced her to lick blood and drink from a toilet, and told his mother to kill Williams if she tried to escape.
Authorities previously said Williams was also forced to eat rat and dog feces.

According to criminal complaints filed in the county, Williams was assaulted, stabbed in the left leg, choked with cords and beaten for at least a week. When she was found, big parts of her hair had also been torn off of her scalp.
Williams says that Alisha Burton 22 cut her ankle with a knife while saying, "That's what we do to Niggers around here," police records show.


"I don't understand a human being doing another human being the way they did my daughter," Carmen Williams told The Associated Press on Tuesday from her daughter's hospital room. "I didn't know there were people like that out here."

Deputies received a tip and Saturday visited a home owned by Frankie Brewster in Big Creek, West Virginia.
As the deputies spoke with a woman on the front porch, "a female inside the residence limped toward the door with her arms held out, saying 'Help me,' " according to a news release from the sheriff's department.
"It's something you'd expect to see in a horror movie, not in Logan County," Abraham said. "She was subjected to unendurable torture down there."

The six are charged with kidnapping, sexual assault, malicious wounding and battery. If convicted of kidnapping, a suspect could face a sentence of up to life in prison. The penalty for first-degree sexual assault is 15 to 35 years.
Abraham said he is seeking the maximum sentence on the kidnapping charges. In addition to the Brewsters, the suspects are Danny J. Combs, 20, of Harts, West Virginia; and George A. Messer, 27, Karen Burton, 46, and her daughter, Alisha Burton, 23, all of Chapmanville, West Virginia.
"They all have previous records and have been arrested numerous times," Sheriff W.E. Hunter said Tuesday. "They are familiar to law enforcement."
Frankie Brewster was charged with first-degree murder in 1994, but pleaded guilty to the lesser charge of manslaughter in the death of an 84-year-old woman. She was released in 2000 after serving five years in prison, according to court records cited by the AP.
All of the six individuals that are involved in this case are accused of 108 different cases of crimes all combined.
All six were being held in lieu of $100,000 bail, and all requested court-appointed attorneys, the AP reported.
Investigators are still looking for two other people suspected of driving Williams to the home, according to the AP.

Carmen Williams had not reported her daughter missing, saying Megan Williams often disappeared for weeks at a time.

Carmen Williams said she is "horrified" by her daughter's injuries.
"She wakes up crying, and the first thing she hollers is 'Mommy,' " she said."

That is just as frightening to hear about. It Infuriates me it does not matter what race that young teen is still he was beaten. WHY.. ? What is the purpose? What was the purpose for Megan Williams to be abused and violated.. What is the purpose? Why is Mychal Bell still in jail on no charges pending...? About what can hamper and hinder dreams and what lies in wait to snare the desire and the dreams from our children and we as adults. Stories like this will continue to plague the airwaves, which someone is being battered, abused or murdered. Which it dishartening enough to see and to know that can happen anywhere in the world.....Look what one person can do.. it does matter.. The choice is each one of us to support.. Not to berate what a person is doing to contribute to the progess of change. Or ask what they are doing to change the demagogues that society has used to define African Americans.. It belongs to all of us to change it.. one issue at a time, one hour, minute,day, week, or year.

I just have to say how horrible this was. Really, I think this was more terrible than the events in Jena La. It was depravity committed against a black WOMAN. Is it open season on our women? A STRONG message must be sent to America that says we won't stand for this. Okay, there are no officials address in this matter, but...well, what can be done when its 'okay' to call our women "bitches" and "hoes"? If we ourselves cannot show our women respect, how can we make the world respect our women?

This is sick and I wish something could be done that would prevent such from EVER happening again. But, Man can't do it.
